And how do you determine that when their needs to be a general use term? You get 100% consensus vote on ~1 billion people of a certain color in the world? Or do you let someone vocal with a platform and an unhealthy interest in making a point choose for their race?

Black/white is a figurative and often actual dichotomy in the United States. I don't see one being offensive without the other also. And I don't see some huge movement against me being called white.

ETA: This is only okay to me when using as an adjective or a noun for the race. It isn't acceptable to use it as a noun referring to an individual.
