Highlands in my book is good but not the best in Birmingham. I like Hot and Hot down the street better and Gianmarco’s better than both.
New Orleans blows Birmingham out of the water in terms of diversity of great dining. Birmingham has 5 or 6 excellent places that would be excellent in NOLA but there’s a sharp downturn then relatively speaking.
Bham may not be packed to the brim with world class fine dining on par with Highland's or Hot & Hot, but we are packed to the brim with places like Delta Blues and Saw's that won't win national awards, but are just really really fricking good food.

I don't see a parking lot for knuckle checking.

You know, I was born and raised in S. Louisiana, so I'm not sure what your elitism angle is here.
That doesn't answer my question......
A lot of people were born and raised in S Louisiana......doesn't mean they know what the frick they are talking about when it comes to restaurants in New Orleans

It does matter. I'm not some rube that hits the town twice a year and thinks that Mother's and Mulate's define the culinary scene of New Orleans. It's a fricking obnoxious response that reeks of elitism.
Of course if you live there you're going to be in to the "scene" more so than someone who doesn't live there, but if you're trying to establish some sort of "insider knowledge requirement", doesn't that kind of substantiate what I was implying about being somewhat overrated?
Posted on 5/8/18 at 2:48 pm to Mo Jeaux
So you can’t name the last 5-10 restaurants you’ve eaten at in New Orleans?
Posted on 5/8/18 at 3:02 pm to Mo Jeaux
You said New Orleans restaurant scene is overrated but you can’t name one restaurant. Got it.
Posted on 5/8/18 at 3:06 pm to tgrbaitn08
I said it was "somewhat overrated" "particularly on this board". It's an opinion, and you can have a different one. Just take a pass on the "insider knowledge" "you're ignorant" attitude. I obviously don't live there, so I'm not dining there on a significantly frequent basis, but do you not think that may give me a slightly better vantage point to assert my opinion?

I don’t have any insider knowledge that anyone whom has been to New Orleans in the past year wouldn’t have. I’m just a regular joe that eats out once maybe twice a week. I’m far from a foodie or foot critic. I was just asking you to name what restaurants, in your opinion, were overrated.
You never know, I may just agree with you.

Why not? There's a lot of great food in Southside and its not the only restaurant there that wins awards or is nationally recognized.
Totally agree, but with the exception of Hot and Hot, they are all Frank Stitt restaurants. I’m just saying that I’d put Highlands up against anything I’ve had in New Orleans or NYC. We are really lucky to have it in Birmingham.

Chris Hastings has another spot in Pepper Place called OvenBird that's really good.

Absolutely

Best thing I ate in the B-ham was a fried bologna sandwich.

Going there next weekend.

You would be surprised at some of the big shots that come through during raceweek. But you are correct for 95% of the people visiting Talladega.

This and it isn’t even close
Highlands was a unique experience but it was not my cup of tea. I guess I’m not cultured.

Great restaurant, well deserved. No need to slag on NOLA, though.
I have three Beard winners in walking distance from my house. And nine from my office.
