Lots of people with their panties in a wad ITT. No one really believes that Birmingham is a better food city than freaking New Orleans. But, Highlands is a place that has absolutely no business being in 5 Points South in Birmingham, so it’s really nice to see Frank Stitt finally get recognized. We love all of his restaurants, no matter how many barner servers he triggers.

I was just responding about the overrated comment.
I’m very happy about Alabama stepping up their reataurant game.
Read some stuff in Garden and Gun magazine over the last year or two that was highlighting the good that is going on in Birmingham

I'm guessing the folks that think the nola food scene sucks are the same folks who visit and never leave the F-Quarter.

Why not? There's a lot of great food in Southside and its not the only restaurant there that wins awards or is nationally recognized.

Define over rated and tell us why your feel that way.
I’d like for him to name the last 5-10 restaurants he’s eaten at in New Orleans not named Mulates, Mother’s, Bayou Burger.or Deanies.

Cafe du monde
Which btw your beignets can suck it too, because Highland's also took home the James Beard for Best Pastry Chef in America

I hear this place serves up one hell of plate of boiled peanuts.

Doesn't get any better than The Peanut Depot on Morris Avenue for boiled peanuts

While improved, Birmingham is still in that tier-3 status to me.
Tier 1
New Orleans, Charleston, Atlanta
Tier 2
Asheville, Nashville, Charlotte, Savannah
Tier 3
Birmingham, Memphis, Louisville

Was your intent just to focus on this region?
New York and San Francisco are top tier

seeing that every place he listed is in the region, i'd say yes

Hell I would bust through the doors of a place serving good boiled peanuts

That's probably fair, but in my opinion Birmingham is possibly the most underrated food city in the US. Unless you're already in the know about it, Birmingham doesn't get a whole lot of recognition from the general public.

You know, I was born and raised in S. Louisiana, so I'm not sure what your elitism angle is here.

I agree with you.

Agree as well. Good food city.
Highlands in my book is good but not the best in Birmingham. I like Hot and Hot down the street better and Gianmarco’s better than both.
New Orleans blows Birmingham out of the water in terms of diversity of great dining. Birmingham has 5 or 6 excellent places that would be excellent in NOLA but there’s a sharp downturn then relatively speaking.

Only got to eat there a couple of times but it was worth every penny every time we went. Outstanding food.

Delta Blues Hot Tamales in 5 points is amazing - little hole in the wall joint, but damn good food - and everything is Gluten Free, which is double win for the wife and I.
Birmingham has good places, and is on the rise in the food category - but it can't sniff New Orleans

Zagat recently called Bham one of the next hot food cities

Also, Bon Appetite magazine recently moved from NYC to Bham. Pretty interesting move
