In my small town the new cops come here to get some experience then leave to go to a city or where the pay is higher.

The guy is dumb working anywhere for 10 years and making that little. Hell, he'd be making more at Wally World after ten years.

Wow, does she work in the public system? I just left teaching and our insurance was just a little over $600 per month. That's for myself, my wife, and our two kids.

I believe they were paid OT. The math on the billboard does not compute.

84 x 16.42 = 1379.28

1379.28 - 445.54 - 120.25 - 210 = 603.49 (billboard list $639.39 NET PAY)

Assuming the Gross Pay is wrong and the Net Pay is correct there is some time & a half.

Lol you don’t need an education to be an officer. Get the frick outta here.

That is true - In other parts of the country you DO have to have an education (yes - a college one). Many departments here in Texas require applicants to have completed 2yrs from an accredited institution in order to be eligible.

- Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston require 30-45 credit hours (60 hours if applying prior to 21st Bday).
- Multiple smaller departments in the [typically wealthier/relatively safer] DFW "suburbs" require a completed Bachelor's Degree (i.e. Arlington, Plano).

DS does give a night shift differential pay of $0.50 an hour that might have been added.

Is someone forcing this person to go work for the Denham Springs Police Department?

We have this thing in America, where you don't have to work a certain job if you don't want to. You simply go find a better one. When you get an offer letter that states they pay you $16/hr, it doesn't also come with a gun pointing at you forcing you to sign the offer letter and take the job.

See we had this problem at my company where we couldn't find a good technician b/c we wanted to pay them $20/hr, when a good one makes $30+/hr. So for 3 years, our idiot manager only hired shitty workers at <$20/hr, and now that we have no good technicians b/c the good ones went to the competition who pays a lot more, our service sucks and we are losing jobs b/c of it. So now they decided maybe we should pay guys $30/hr and have good technicians. Crazy philosophy to pay people what they are worth, and if you don't, you likely won't have top notch employees.

Instead of being a police officer with shitty pay, go take your arse to the plants and make money morons. If you're being a police officer out of the goodness of your heart, then quit bitching about the pay. You knew what you signed up for.

It isn't the goodness of their heart. More like the power trip.

So when people on the outside looking in say things like "you knew what you were getting into when you took the job" or "find something else to do to make more money" it is a very uneducated and simplistic point of view that is generally pretty insulting to the people that are "stuck" in their careers.

It isn't uneducated to say that. It's uneducated for someone to continue to work a job where they know they can't provide a decent living for their family, while bitching about it.

They aren't stuck. They are choosing to stay and bitch, instead of leaving for greener pastures.
It's not hard at all to find another job making a lot more than $16/hr in South Louisiana, even for someone without a degree. 10 years as a cop looks good on a resume if you aren't a piece of shite.
Go find a new job or quit bitching about your current one. This is America. You are in control of your future if you want to be. or, This is America, let's bitch about our current situation and stay in it instead of finding a better situation since i can't do anything for myself and expect others to do it for me. Pick your America.
