Would it have upset anyone if Gates bought a couple yachts for his kids with that money and we never heard this story? Shouldn't a thread have been started on a random Tuesday in November about how Gates didn't give 76 million to the homeless in America?

In fairness, most of the board has been pro cryptocurrencies for several years so they could have turned Gates' 100 billion dollars into about 65 quadrillion if he would have invested with them.

It isn’t. I’m not criticizing where the man spends it. I’m just saying that spending it in Nigeria isn’t outright a better net return than spending it here.
But I’m a pessimist that believes the track record of African use of foreign funds is dismal.

Had you read the article you'd know they already used the money and have virtually eradicated polio within their borders. So they used the foreign funds the way they agreed to use them and it worked. Gates is now paying off that debt because they showed good faith.

It's like we read a different article than everyone else.
The way this debt was paid is about as efficient and effective as you can ask to ensure the money is spent wisely.
The foundation didn't give $5 to the homeless guy outside of Taco Bell. Instead, they made that guy get a degree and then paid for his education after he got the degree.

It's still $76 million Nigeria gets to keep in their pockets for whatever they want.
The sad part is that Bill Gates basically has to bribe Nigeria and likely indirectly fund some of their nefarious activities just to ensure that people can get basic care for a disease we've completely cured in the Western world. Nigeria is not a poor country, if they wanted to cure polio they could probably have done it by now.

If he wanted to really help Nigeria he would pony up to eliminate malaria. It kills more people there than anything else.

Yeah, that's why things like their foundation exist. They're taking care of people who aren't getting care from other sources. They're not going to just say frick it, Nigerians deserve polio if their government won't take a stand.

Probably requires a more systemic approach in terms of healthcare costs. Nigerians are clearly only willing to do something if someone will give them money as a result. They aren't really doing anything truly altruistic in this scenario and certainly they aren't going to invest in long term health care benefits if I had to guess based on their history up to present day.
