well, spend what you like, never catch me spending over 300 for a bike, no wonder the guy stole it, too much temptation for him

so you haven't heard back from the cops?

9th arrest eh?

it's a habit, he needs to go thru the whole wringer as we used to say, b4 changing his mind about his career choice...dumbass...

WTF? God people are gullible. Does he ride in the tour de France? If not, that is the stupidest purchase I can think of.

I like most of how you are processing this. And since you asked, tell the kid you know he has the bike and you could call the cops but you are going to buy him a less expensive bike because you know he needs transportation.

$4500 for a road bike isnt even that high up there, they can go up to $15,000+ easy. I ride probably 150+ miles a week, I do triathalons, I know its hard to believe but I guess im a sucker. There is no way the kid knew what it cost, he just grabbed the one at the end of the bike rack fwiw.

Im 6'7 customizing a bike to fit me isnt that easy too, it cost a little more. He's a little short guy too a whole foot shorter so i dont even know how he rode it.

Why do you leave a $4500 bike in a rack? Don't most people at least take the wheel off to discourage thief's?

just curious, would I have any say if/when he's arrested later in him accepting a plea?

Doubtful. I'm not a legal expert, I'm just going by how many people are in the news pissed that their family members' killers were given light sentences.

Can't you sue the business if you do not get your bike back? The only reason he was there was because they allowed him a job and granted him unrestricted access

You have all that info and haven't gone over there to get the bike back yet?

Here's a solution: contact the investigator's supv. and tell him that unless a cop meets him at the criminal's house TODAY to get your bike back that you're next call will be to a local tv station (especially if they do public shaming investigative bits on things like bad cops, crappy landlords, etc). Don't accept any answers that involve waiting.

If it's an aggressive station with a good audience, I can almost guarantee a cop will be waiting at the criminal's house to help you get your bike back.

I'm starting to run deeper than just your average petty theft. What would Oceans 11 do?

What if the detective is the uncle of the kid, moving from town to town, snatching up bikes, pawning, and then moving on.

OR Further more what if they hacked into your phone, your 911 call when directly to the thief, to which he dispatched a "detective." The detective slow plays you and miraculously does not get your bike returned.

This shite goes deep man...

Bad comparison. There is nothing about a bicycle worth $4500, nothing.

It's by no means an outrageous price for a road bike, but certainly a higher end piece of equipment that I would never leave chained up anywhere. I probably have 3-4k invested in my tri bike and about 1k in my other, but I keep them in my office. I won't even leave them in my personal garage in case someone accidentally hits the garage door open or something.

Definitely frustrating knowing exactly who did this and not seeing a response, but at the same time take better care of your things and this won't happen. I know that's a shifty thing to say at a time like this but I feel like you were taking a risk. Doesn't make it right, but still.

My husband spent 5k on his mountain bike(which isn't an outrageous price if you know anything about good mountain bikes). He won't even leave his bike in our attached garage to our house because of how hot it gets in there in AZ summers. It is stored inside the house. But if the climate wasn't so extreme in the summer...I would imagine he would still keep the bike inside. You don't spend that much on a bike to leave locked up in a bike rack.
