I will never understand ppl who get pools and they’re tiny like this. It’s a glorified hot tub that you can’t even dive in.

boat

More of a sign of stupidity. Definitely, NOT a wealth status symbol.

Two best days of owning a boat:
1. the day you buy it
2. the day you sell it.

Wife and I are looking at building a house in the next 3-5 years. We are looking at building a nice pool. Nothing to do with financials.

I want to be that house all the kids want to go to. Because if they want to be there I can keep an eye out easier for what’s going on. I’ll take the financial bad decision for the hopeful mental ease.

Screw having a boat. The best boat is someone else’s boat.

The problem with pools is they don’t add nearly the value to a home that they cost.

We put in a pool. It’s a gunnite with pavers for the deck. It added approximately $25K value to our house. It cost $70K. We knew this but wife and kids were insistent. It is nice for my house to be where the kids want to go. I know where they are and who they are hanging with.
A liner pool was less expensive, but added almost no value to home.

ETA: power bill went up about $200 per month. Pool service $175 per month.

lucky it added anything. i tell people do not put in a pool unless you absolutely dont plan to sell anytime soon.

it attracts some buyers, scares others.

i have gunnite at 2 homes now, didnt add 200 a month to my power bill, not even 100. I do my own service, spend less than an hour a week and less than 100 a month in chemicals

now i had a problem in may/june with metals getting into the water, that cost me about 300 after everythign said and done get everythign right.

pools cost money but not a ton if you do your own servicing.

A few Louisiana-themed status symbols that come to mind are...

LSU Football season tickets

A camp in Grand Isle

Truck nuts

I thought a customer taking a helicopter from a spot on his property to another spot on his property that took us 8 minutes to drive was a flex, turns out having a white gardener in south Texas was his big flex.

Pool is used way more often in the south.

Hardly anyone my age has a boat. Only old men have them.

Nothing is a bigger status symbol than having a boat with a pool on it and an in ground pool large enough for it to fit in.

Nowhere near true anymore. My boat is worth double what I paid for it in early 2020.

If they have both and are NOT financed; winners.
If they financed either; losers (non-winners).
