Can someone translate this into language I understand? Like hard working Hispanic landscapers vs the white trash methheads? Most Indians (on visas) around here are making well into the six figures.

Fed government should also use incentives for public high schools to offer programming as a class especially in underserved and poor communities. It will help bring kids out of poverty.

They’ve been pushing school choice and more computer science courses.

But you are right that this is very important. Unfortunately public education is the most resistant to change.

This took 3 years to long, better late than never I guess. I hope this isnt more election posturing that gets overturned in a few years when people arent paying attention. Immigration is one of the biggest reasons wages havent risen the last 20 years.

Only thing that sucks, is that in some cases some foreign workers are going to now be paid more than their american counterparts. Sucks to see someone with as much or less experience than you billing at a higher rate. Been there in the past (bosses were foreign and from the same country)

The abuse of this program transformed our city within a decade to something completely different. Massive importation of cheap labor, wiping out jobs for college grads, and with the added bonus of thousands of non-English speaking kids and anchor babies that can absolutely wreck school K-5 systems.

These are mostly good people, don't get me wrong. We just need to make sure jobs are prioritized for citizens first. Companies should have to prove a job cannot be staffed with Americans first (like most other countries require). And then, the definitely should not be allowed to discount the salary, or have more than maybe, 5% or so of a staff on these visas.

Definitely not the case in reality. They are paying 50-75 cents on the dollar for these jobs. They'll pay $60k for a $90-120k job, for instance. There's significant fraud with companies dealing with contract labor, as well.

There is no need to recruit from overseas. We have plenty of talent here we need to employ. The only reason a company has for importing labor is to save $$.

I deal with Immigration all day everyday in the tech industry. I’ve said this before...but this is not a tech industry issue it’s a US higher education issue.

Tech companies need the skills they need and will get them where they can. The issue is US Colleges are lagging so far behind in what is taught that there’s no pool of new grads that meet the skill set companies need.

That being said, I don’t give a shite if you learn to code in College or on YouTube in your spare time as long as you can do it. I hire a LOT of devs from coding boot camps. Usually, the folks who go through boot camps had a prior professional career and are looking for a career change. These folks have a lot more business maturity.

99% of US Colleges don’t teach shite we need.

We struggle to find Contractors worth a shite. We’re charged $180k while the employee takes home $65k. Cog, Hexaware, Tek, they’re all a pain in the arse to deal with. We’ve been double billed for two Engineers; one does the dev work and one sits there and “monitors” the other. It’s such bullshite.

Working in IT the H1-B is bullshite. If they cannot fill the jobs pay the employees we have more and you will fill the positions.

Thats not true. Colleges do teach how to code. However the market for coding is not enough to attract new students because so much has been contracted out offshore and/or H1-B visas take those slots for a salary a lot less than what an American would want. If you pay are paying $65k a year that is your problem.

No, no they aren’t. Not even half that.

guess what I'm saying is if a satellite doesn't have near the Visa process we now have, those trained and skilled workers will be moved. With no backfill.

you have no idea what you are talking about. It’s not nearly as easy as you make it out to be.

entry level coders aren’t worth more than $65k/yr

Because they've had mountains of cash thrown at them to do so from Disney, Google, Facebook, etc.

My company will hire less of them and keep less of them on-board because of this.

Honestly though, we're going to miss out on some great employees and I think this will lead to outsourcing more work to foreign countries.

I hate when people say "there are tons of Americans that can do those jobs!" when there really aren't a lot of the time. American education system, particular around STEM, has fricked our workforce up.

I'm pro-tough immigration laws, but I think H1Bs that do jobs that require high levels of education and pay their taxes on time should be left alone for the most part.

I'm in a business that deals with this every day.

Those specialized roles are much harder to fill via outsourcing. American companies will likely retain those top tier employees and meet their new wage requirements - now in line with what Americans are paid.

The H1-B was never intended to bring in entry level hires and train them up for very low wages in an environment that makes it scary/risky for them to ask for a raise. It was intended to bring the very best talent to this country. It's been abused for a long time. This reform was definitely needed and I honestly don't understand why some Democrats have fought it so hard.

I like this opinion, but slightly disagree with the bolded portion.

No time to teach the technical skills necessary when your focus on education is social justice and critical race theory.

The best universities in the world are in the U.S..

It also doesnt help that a lot of STEM fields require accredited schools to distribute degrees before getting licensed/certified in a particular field.

So if American universities arent sending out STEM workers then you have no other source if quality is important.

It's pretty obvious H1B is a government sanctioned wage suppression program.

frick'em. They have made their bed, and now I am ready to fight them over it. Love Trump.

What bed? The bed where they are getting federally guaranteed loans to keep artificially inflating tuition, massively increase administrative bloat and having younger generations foot the bill for nothing and come out in massive debt?

I think they are fine with that bed. We need drastic reform.
