DETROIT (AP) — New vehicles sold in the United States will have to travel an average of at least 40 miles per gallon of gasoline in 2026, up from about 24 mpg, under new federal rules unveiled Friday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said its fuel economy requirements will undo a rollback of standards enacted under President Donald Trump.

quote:

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, whose department includes the NHTSA, said the rules also will help strengthen national security by making the country less dependent on foreign oil and less vulnerable to volatile gasoline prices.

quote:

Gas prices also have helped to fuel inflation to a 40-year high, eating up household budgets and hitting President Joe Biden’s approval ratings.

“Transportation is the second-largest cost for American families, only behind housing,” Buttigieg said. The new standards, he said, will help keep the U.S. more secure and preserve “the freedom of our country to chart its future without being subject to other countries and to the decisions that are being made in the boardrooms of energy companies.”

Get ready for $150,000 aluminium and carbon fiber pickup trucks with quad turbo 1.5L engines and hybrid battery packs.

They weren't elected the first time. What makes you think this is a concern?

It's like they don't think the actual votes matter anymore.

You know this kills all cheap cars right? It takes a lot of lighter, more expensive materials and power systems to bring the average MPG of a Camry or Malibu to over 40mpg, much less a mid sized SUV or pickup truck. The Corolla or Civic barely get 40mpg highway, much less average. And they already cost $25,000.

GM will just kill all of their ICE vehicles except pickup trucks and SUVs...... then use their EV sales to offset them so their CAFE average is 40+ MPG.

Cars that size don't get 40 mpg average without hybrid powertrains. Which means that compact car will be pushing $30,000 to start.

When you put 35's and trucknuts on anything, you wont come close to touching 20 mpg.

Anytime now a certain poster will be here with a long winded, haughty lecturing post on how this is awesome and how awful and dumb we are to even question it, much less disagree

There goes any affordable car.

They must think public transit doesn't suck here. Or that the poor don't need to move around.

This. This is why you have the proliferation of turo-fours, bajillion-speed auto transmissions and CVTs, auto-stop engines, and transmissions tuned to shift at idling speeds.

Every single one of these things is a detriment to simplicity and longevity.

It's only going to get worse.

These guys are fricking idiots. Or they just want normal cars to go extinct in favor of electric.
