Is choosing to do this an act of defiance by a cyclist? ‘You have to accomodate me’ or just stupidity? Why do some of them thinking riding bikes in dangerous locations that impact traffic is a good idea?

Based on the cyclist I know......defiance. Accommodate me.

If there are four lanes, why cant you just change lanes?

Having the right to be in the lane doesn't make it a good decision. I ride as well but if I'm going to disrupt the flow of traffic I choose another route. Dick move IMO.

I like how they want the same space, share the road bs, but at a red light, nobody coming..they go through, because they're on a bike.

Same here. I ride 3-4 times a week and try to avoid the busy roads especially at the busy times.

I call them out on it when I see it. I let them know there was a stop sign they just rode through. Their response is a good 60/40 split of the middle phalanges or F you.

That's just being a spandex cyclist.

Sure, it's stupid. But it feels righteous.

you really think anyone thinks this way? when im on the bike i do everything in my power to avoid cars altogether and i think most other in the "spandex army" do as well.

your "defiance" likely comes from the hipster bike crews FAR more than people doing it for sport/fitness

riders of bikes and motorcycles, never understood the logic or insanity, it doesn’t matter who has the right, who is right or wrong, you lose every time you encounter a car or truck, every time...

I think I speak for a fair number of people:

My experience on here, and with friends who ride IRL, says you're probably right

Conventional wisdom, general prudence and hope for humanity says you're probably right

Experience with bikers on the road says you're very, very wrong

I don't know how other cities are, but Baton Rouge is awful regarding how much freedom I'm supposed to give cyclists. They're really not allowed to ride on the sidewalk? Instead I have to wait behind their slow arse on the main road. I don't remember this many cyclists when I lived in Mobile - but I guess the city layout wasn't really favorable for that.

Get a car or GTFO. Go ride your bike in circles around the lake. Just stay out of my way.

as someone who really doesnt want to be lumped in with "them" this makes me sad

i dont understand the logic of bikes vs cars. I like to ride a bike for fun and exercise but i am intimately aware that a car ends me. i stay off busy roads at busy times... dont get the entitlement mentality of "MY ROAD BITCH" from either side

I've never had a hostile run in with a biker

But I have seen a whole lot of reckless, dangerous behavior

No more than you see from cars, of course, but given the ramifications of an incident...

had a friend get nailed by a car on his bike. Totally the woman's fault and he's fricked up in the hospital right now bitching about this lady that "did this to him"...but this is the second time its happened to him. HE thinks everyone should make accommodations for him because "its the law". He rides in the middle of the damned highway because "its his right" and then wonders how this could happen to him a 2nd time...
