But anyone using a "literal interpretation" of the Bible, I assume they know how to read and interpret Ancient Aramaic.

New Testament was written in Ancient Greek.

The problem here is people today assume the people who wrote the Bible understand the world as we do today. They knew nothing of North and South America. For them, the middle east and Europe was the world. When they talk about a worldwide flood they're not talking about Brazil or Canada.

By the time of the New Testament, India and China were known to the Roman world, and there was intermittent trade. Some postulate that early Christian thinking was influenced by Buddhist philosophy.

Those who actually knew Jesus would not have known Greek. Anything they said or wrote down would be in Hebrew/Aramiac. Scholars writing it down many years after Jesus's death wrote it down in Greek.

I tend to agree. Many of the common stories people believe are literal are more or less symbolic. Sure, there are literal parts of the Bible like the lineages and such. But if a person claims to believe that every word is meant to be literally taken then I guess when it call Jesus the lion of Judah they think he has a mane and roars.

Greek was the common language, even moreso than Latin. Everyone knew a few words and phrases, and educated people, like Saul/Paul, would have been fluent.

I'm confused by this. So you are an atheist with strong opinions on the book of Job? Or you're a sarcastic believer who concedes my point? Or some third option maybe?

Nah bro, just someone who came from a very religious family and was made to go church even though I didn't want to. As a child I didn't have a choice, religion was drilled into me, but when I reached adulthood, I chose a different path. According to my family I'm on the highway to hell now.

I wanted to start a thread the other day that was sort of religious in nature that can be put under this topic, but I wanted to see if there are people on the board who simply believe "satan" is in us trying to force us to sin.

For example, when you hear someone who was going down a bad road once in their life, but they have "turned things around" and they say something like "Satan use to guide me and I didn't know any better so I listened to him, but now that I found Jesus, anytime Satan tries to tempt me, I know what it is and have the power to tell him no". Are these people speaking in literal terms? Do they really think that when they were younger and doing bad shite, it was all because Satan was inside of their head guiding them in the wrong direction?

It'll get whacked. It's forbidden to mention God just about anywhere these days.
30 years ago I would t have believed it. Sure enough ....

I don't understand why this is so confusing for you. God is very upfront about what he wants you to do. There are just 10 rules you have to follow. We call them the 10 commandments and they're super easy to remember since like half of them are about not cheating on God with other gods (who don't exist by the way). And then of course there's a quick 1200 pages of abrahamic law mixed in with some sweet stories about God kicking arse plus some stuff about the gays (make sure you know that bit is the most important). And that's honestly about it besides the part where God's son AKA himself comes down and says that we don't have to follow the old rules anymore. Except we are actually supposed to still follow them. Well some of them. Definitely the gay part for sure. And every so often God will drop in to let you know specifically what His will is in certain situations. He won't actually show up in person but you'll feel his presence leading you in the right direction. Which will feel a lot like you're just using God's will as an excuse for your shitty life choices but it's definitely not that.

I honestly don't know how that could be any more clear?

The only commandment Jesus gave was to love God and one another. Check out Luke 10:27.

The Ten Commandments are parables? I didn't know that.

He also said love thy neighbor as thyself. Don't trade in temple. Keep the Sabbath. He had a few more than that one.

And interesting you bring up Luke, cause if you go on a few more chapters he says that loving your family can interfere with loving God, so a true devotee will hate their family.

I'll concede that the message gets much clearer when Jesus shows up, but people defending the old testament like it had some moral teachings are either not honest or haven't read it.

ETA Luke 14:26 to cite
