I don't understand the point of it if not to be taken literally.

Not to mention how do you know what to take literally and what not to?

Don't apologize to me buddy, apologize to the Big Man. The great thing is you can repent for your sins at any time because God is always listening! But you will of course need to come in to one of our locations and run it through one of our well trained certified middle men. I know it doesn't say in the Bible that you need to do that but God told us privately that that's what he wants you to do

There are somewhere around 660 commandments given in the Old Testament. The way I have heard it explained by more theologically inclined people than myself, is that Jesus knew all of the commandments given before he lived, but said that if you take care of what Luke 10:27 says, then the rest will take care of itself.

The Ten Commandments are parables? I didn't know that.

I'm saying that there are no parables in the old testament and few in the new. There's no lessons to be learned from the old testament, just history and laws.

ETA Luke 14:26 to cite

He was talking about hating the worldly things, I believe. Not literally hating your family. Love your family, just don't make them an idol over the Trinity.

And that works if you know how to navigate the book switching from literal to figurative interpretation. But not everyone does, there are people in this very thread saying that that's the wrong approach.

People have been arguing about this for awhile now and I doubt we'll see eye to eye. But can you at least agree that the morality in the whole of the text shifts around A LOT?

Hey that is a fair enough point. Taking it all literally is consistent. My point was that many Christians tend to take some stories literally but when it come the prophesy they start to look for ways to interpret the text to fit with whatever is going on in the world and I dont understand it.

Another poster stated it already, but Greek was the English of the old world.

Additinally, Aramaic is a melodic language by design, in order to better memorize such stories for spoken word. That spoken word was first transcribed in Ancient Greek.

I think that the "morality" that originates from the text is skewed by fundamentalists and general morons that make shite up.

Of course, I am honestly not your typical Christian, either. Never heard God or Jesus speak to me, am scared shitless when "tongues" are spoken (that's another topic), and there are other things. I do, however, feel like some things that have happened in my life recently, both good and bad, don't really have a worldly explanation that I know of.

Other parts of the New Testament makes it clear that we are to obey God's commandments. Part of loving God is obeying.
