Nowhere in the Bible does it say invite Jesus into your heart. It does say repent and believe however.

I seriously doubt anyone has read the whole thing, it's long as frick and boring as frick. It could say anything in there and we would never know.

Almost the entirety of the bible was plagiarized from earlier myths. Anyone who looks at it as some unique and revelatory text has a poor knowledge of history

but absolutely ZERO evidence for a worldwide flood.

The problem here is people today assume the people who wrote the Bible understand the world as we do today. They knew nothing of North and South America. For them, the middle east and Europe was the world. When they talk about a worldwide flood they're not talking about Brazil or Canada.

There is plenty of evidence of a great flood, at least in the mediterranean region.

And I've heard that Sodom and Gomorrah may have been an meteor strike. Thats not the point. A great flood may have occurred but was it caused by God because he was pissed at humans or was it simply a major Tsunami.

On a serious note, this always interests me:
quote:

Bible as a book of parables,

People often talk about how the bible isn't supposed to be literal and instead it's supposed to teach values truth parable. But they seldom talk about what specific values it's supposed to teach. Most of the parables can be described as morally confused at best. My favorite example is Job, what's the lesson? Be nice to authority that mistreats you? Don't doubt God? Your neighbors are always wrong? You can interpret it many different and contradicting ways.

So what values does the bible actually teach?

That's fine. That story was written by barely literate desert nomads (at best).

It is when modern day conservative american Christians try to spin it as the LITERAL WORD with no understanding of science, history, context, translation, etc.

I've found it often depends on the teacher.

Keep the faith even in times of adversity.

See that doesn't happen with Aesop or even the Tao Te Ching. If something is a Fable for the sake of moral learning, it's usually clear what the point is. The bible (especially the old testament) is just schizophrenic in its messages. Which is what makes me think it's supposed to be more historical than allegorical.

The men who wrote the Bible were just men. They weren't omnipotent and didn't have half the understanding of science that the average person does today. I don't know why some people want to assume they were all God-like beings.

But job lose faith and questions god, there's no repercussions, just a weird rambling explanation of how powerful God is. Go read it, there's no lesson, just things that happen.

ETA then there's Noah, no trying to save fellow men or help the wicked. Just save a few animals and keep your family dry. The lesson? Wood floats, I guess.

Be careful what you add and take away from the Bible, because Revelations and everything.

Btw, lots of cool archeological proof to the global flood and sudden disappearance of S&G.

Revelation. It's the "Book of Revelation", why does everyone add the S?

Maybe you are right. Maybe trying to shoehorn a lesson into what is simply being presented as fact is the wrong way of looking at it.

It sounds like you just don't have a deep enough understanding of the scripture to find the moral. With many years of devout Bible study, prayer, and substantial monetary donations to the church you will begin to find the true meaning of God's word.

I'm confused by this. So you are an atheist with strong opinions on the book of Job? Or you're a sarcastic believer who concedes my point? Or some third option maybe?

Thats what the book is called but there are multiple Revelations in the book of Revelation.

I take the Bible at face value, I'm not inclined to decide what is and is not metaphorical.

I find those that think they are intelligent and/or spiritual enough to decipher metaphors from reality Biblically are neither.
