AMAZING VIDEO of rocket launched to over 300,000 feet and then landing very close to original launch pad. The future belongs to reusable rockets:

Musk and SpaceX have been trying this from space to fiery results.

This one landed from orbit which is worlds different but still a huge step forward.

Why would you want that? Doesn't it use more fuel?

I would think you could pull off more launches with a reusable rocket that you would be sitting safely near the launch pad shortly after the launch.

Not sure. If it does, perhaps fuel costs would be offset by more successful launches and passenger fees. Don't know.

It would allow rockets to be reusable. For people like Musk who want to colonize Mars, reusable rockets are basically a necessity in order to bring the cost of the trip down to a cost-effective level.

The white equivalent of the Space Balls helmet?

Tres phallique?

Don't get me wrong, this is a huge accomplishment and I don't want to take away from it, but SpaceX is trying to do this with a standard sized rocket booster built to carry payload into space. This successful test appears to be a very small (in comparison) rocket that in no way could carry a large satellite payload to orbit.

There's a bit of a difference.

Bloomberg

Recycling rockets will be a crucial step for the viability of for-profit space companies. For decades, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration recovered capsules by parachute, as Blue Origin did with the one atop New Shepard, but typically treated the boosters as expendable.

It's cheaper.

More in response to the guy who brought SpaceX's "fiery results" into the conversation. I didn't open the door.

This was a sub orbital flight which basically means it went straight up then came back down. It never achieved orbit.

An orbital trajectory would require much more speed.

Great accomplishment though.

I think they're trying to use this as a crazy "who wants to go see some space" type thing where you can pay to take a ride up and back...space tourism. (I'm in)
