Wow. You can't study history using common sense. You have to use books.

quote:

Do you believe they all just started killing each other because they needed to survive? or did they band together in clans? The population wouldnt be where it is today if thy didnt band together. Thats how I know, and I didnt need a frickin book to tell me.

What about the plenty of examples throughout history of entire societies not adhering to that code? Killing baby girls and deformed children because of perceived weakness? Stoning people to death for stealing or adultry? or burning women for not wearing the proper clothes? sacrificing humans to make crops grow? etc...

What about the examples of wars faught over finite resources and fertile land in ancient history?

To say that every society has been living by the same code of morality as modern day America is completely ignorant or willfully intellectually dishonest. You live in western society and it shows that you have a very limited understanding of the world or history outside of a basic understanding of the concepts of Western Civilization.

All the more reason I choose not to believe. 1 million years is an eye blink in eternity. Whatever I do on this Earth doesnt warrant that kind of punishment, so that benevolent being does not deserve to be worshiped.

bullshite.

You torture, rape, and or/murder an innocent child and you absolutely deserve to be punished for eternity.

You care to argue otherwise?

No. No. No.

You act like there isn't some advantage that would lead to those values being prevalent, and that they would need to be instituted by some magic. But the actual facts are obviously and clearly in exact opposition. We are a social species whose greatest advantage that has led to our dominance is our ability to work together and form societies. Without that our success completely falls apart. Having this morality allows society to exist.

We don't have a society with morality and expected norms because some God told us to. We have all that because it is better for us to live this way. It is much more simple and logical thinking this way. Your explanation ignores reason and cause.

Free will. You can live your life the way you want to but you will be judged after you die. Satan convinces many not to believe in God.

quote:

Even if I grant you that the 3 religions are based on similar beginnings

The way to salvation for all 3 religions you mentioned are completely different. They are so different that only one can be right or none of them could be right. God warns about false religions in the Bible though.

This tells me that it's not likely there is a God.

Actually the more advanced we become in Science the more scientific evidence points towards a creator.

Are you saying the founding fathers were not only not Christian but that their Christian upbringing had nothing to do with the ideals the used to found the country?

quote:

We don't have a society with morality and expected norms because some God told us to. We have all that because it is better for us to live this way.

We have that because we live in a judeo-christian dominated western society. Whether or not you believe in God, the organized Christian religion has had a massive impact on the foundation of the society you live in.

You think people in the middle east and north Korea have the same set of moral codes as you? They don't. They view the world very very very differently.

We cant even comprehend what eternity is as far as punishment goes. We live day to day, year to year. When you talk about a billion years, thats still nothing in eternity time. Adolf Hitler doesnt deserve to be punished for eternity for what he did. We give a life sentence in prison for murder. That means they spend the rest of their existence behind bars until death, where they will meet another fate because the first one was not enough in the eyes of this "thing".

Sounds like ole Newberg is possibly guessing because he does not have enough evidence to support any of his claims he stated. His theory is just a straight up guess.

The idea that morality is dependent on religion is asinine. The cavemen knew right from wrong. Hell, most intelligent animals know right from wrong.

You believe Im the crazy one, yet your belief in god is the only thing keeping you from being an Adolf Hitler or worse.

Your god teaches forgiveness but doesnt use it. He punishes for eternity.

"Well, he's in a better place." If that were true, we would rejoice when a loved one dies. But, we don't because deep down we all know dead means dead.

I grieve for my loss and the loss that other people still alive have to deal with.

I believe that is why most people grieve regardless of whether there is an after life or not.

Nope. Right and wrong only exist because of God and the afterlife.

He would become a serial murderer and rapist without God and the afterlife... because there are no consequences.

That's what you're dealing with. Good luck.

Most intellegent animals will kill and or eat you without a second thought and without any remorse or guilt.

They will also kill weaker things without remorse or guilt.

Go into the jungle and see if you don't get killed because an intellegent animal that you find in there knows it's wrong to kill you.

My comfort does not come from any notion of heaven or afterlife. It comes from the thought that those in my life will retain memories of me and my children will have lives because I existed. That's enough for me.
