The Temptations song "Ball of Confusion" comes to mind while looking at that...ball of confusion.

Seems to be the trend for NOLA lately. Models have the cone smack dab over southeast La.
This does seem to be a recent phenomenon at least, where a lot of early models show theoretical landfalls in the same general area in Louisiana.
Is there a technical reason for this, or is it just random? In the Sally thread yesterday, LegendInMyMind stated:
quote:
Nearly every commercial airliner you see flying has weather instrumentation on it. If they are flying, they are constantly gathering data. That data is fed into global models.
The travel bans and decline in commercial travel due to Covid has taken a considerable number of planes out of the air.
[...] global models are operating at a handicap, missing a considerable chunk of real time, important data that would be gathered by commercial airlines around the world.
Does a current lack of real-time data have something to do with it, or are the early models just not good at accounting for future troughs or other steering mechanisms, like rds illustrated?
Why do they lately seem to default to the same general area?

Just don’t see how anyone even has a clue where this is going until Sunday

This is another example of a messy system that is just now getting organized. The NHC may be doing itself a bit of disservice by putting out earlier long range tracks, particularly before a true center has formed or is fixed.

I wonder if they were looking for something in particular in the eye wall of Teddy?

Can we at least get some shear in the gulf to slow this thing down on development? By the time it hits land it would’ve been in the gulf almost 2 weeks. I mean Jesus how unlucky you gotta be for a system to sit in a single spot right by land for a week. This hurricane season fricking sucks. This coming right after Laura cripples SW LA and now Sally pissing on whoever she can. Worst yet it doesn’t even look like this season is close to slowing down soon.

It’s all these models that become public long before they really mean much. Folks see lines heading in their direction and they start worrying.
