For me, Mississippi and Alabama are 3rd world. Florida wasn’t so bad. Grapefruit and orange juice available. It was almost a Florida museum. Whatcha got?

Why would one stop at these places?

When traveling I stop to eat and get gas. Wouldnt make an extra stop to see a welcome center

Friend,

The absolute tops is the Georgia Welcome Center in Sylvania. Absolutely the best greeting I have ever received at such a center. Buc-ee's is a terrible, made-in-China nightmare. Even its America-themed items are made in China. I can only assume Buc-ee's aficionados are in reality, Chinese plants trying to force their products on us.

Yours,
TulaneLSU

For someone who always posts about traveling, this is a terrible take.

There are far, far, far worse rest stops than those in MS or AL.

Try getting out and about: the Northeastern US has many rest stops that make 3rd world shite holes look like 5-star facilities...

Mississippi's are still bad. Alabama made a new one on I-10 east that's really nice. Florida's had the same one forever but it's decent and I like the free OJ and grapefruit juice.

Heading west into Texas I like I-10 better than I-20's. I-10 has that swamp and boardwalk out back. New Mexico and Arizona's on I-10 west are trash.

The Mississippi Welcome Center in Vicksburg is disgusting.

Texas has good welcome centers. I think the one on I-10 at the LA border has a walking trail if I remember correctly.

Did you just ask us for the best welcome center and then list the ones you hate the most?

Friend,

It is the rare occasion that we do not stop at a welcome center. The docents are universally friendly, informative, and most helpful. The first one I remember ever touring was the one at the Alabama-Mississippi state line, which was torn down almost a decade ago. After five years of construction the new one opened two or three years ago.

Anyway, we were going to east of Destin, and father stopped at this stop. I do not remember if we stopped at the Mississippi one an hour earlier. The docent that day was wearing a white double breasted suit with a long black bow tie. He had a white mustache that was not communicating to the goatee below. This was in a time when few men wore goatees. Despite his unsightly facial hair, he gave me a deliciously cold six ounces of Coca Cola in a paper cup while he told me about Mardi Gras starting in Mobile. I was but three or four at the time, and I was happy to correct his mistake. We argued for a few minutes before he finally admitted that Mardi Gras was first celebrated in Louisiana, not Alabama.

Yours,

I’ve always wondered why there’s a welcome center in St. Landry Parish on I-49

I used to think it was an abandoned building until they put up a sign

Great spot to take a leak

What a terrible take.

When road-tripping, Buc-ee's is great. Clean bathrooms, lots of gas pumps, and a wide selection of snacks in a clean & maintained environment. What more could you ask for?
