I took my 4 month old on a 18 hour trip last year. Have someone sit in the back with him and bring a couple things like this to keep him entertained:

Also be prepared and willing to sing it songs when it’s awake. That usually pacifies them. It will probably sleep for 75% if the time.

iPad.

Stop every 2 hours for outside play.

Time it around nap time.

The kid is 4 months old... Not 2 years.

4 month olds can barely sit upright unassisted, and nap time is fairly inconsistent.

Ok then....

iPad with bright colors and Elmo.

Stop every 2 hours for outside assisted sit-up time.

Breastfeeding so the baby passes out.

Put them in the car and drive? My daughter was super easy to travel with back then in a vehicle. Just had to stop every couple hours to change her diaper.

I miss those days. She couldn't make a mess back then Now that she's two, the back seat looks like a war zone.

I honestly can't remember what my son was like at 4 months

I think we took a road trip around that time, about 7 or 8 hours, and he did fine until the final hour and lost it. My wife's travel strategy has always been is to have a "mom bag" with toys, books, puzzles, and have them at the ready. When they get restless, give them somehting new until they toss it. If they're still restless, hand them something else.

Bring a tablet and let them watch some Youtube videos.

My kid has always enjoyed the Super Simple Songs nursery rhymes.

Brings lots of toys to interchange out when they get bored.

Whoever isn't driving can sit in the back and talk/play with the baby.

Time it right after a feeding and you should get a few hours of nap time to start out the trip.

Does the baby do well in a car seat normally? My oldest would conk right out when in her car seat so we never had any issues with going long distances. If she woke up we would stop to walk her around and change her diaper and fed her and she would usually back to sleep.

My youngest, not so much. Hardly ever falls asleep in the car so someone had to sit back there with her and read to her on long trips. We traveled at night as much as possible with her but because she fought sleep in the car so much, the next day was kind of off kilter.

Try to put them to sleep before leaving. Then cross your fingers they stay asleep.
