I need 12 foot 4x6 for the top horizontal beam on the swing set portion of a jungle gym Im bulding but can only haul 8 foot lengths in my car. Thinking of joining two 6 foot lengths together. What is the best way to do this and ensure the resulting beam is as strong as a single 12 foot length? Looks dont matter. Should I just bolt a few feet of 2x4 to each side?

You should rent a truck to transport the correct beam

Tongue the 4x6 to a 2x6 a few inches on an end of each piece. Flip, over lap and screw together.

You'll need a support pole/a-frame at the seam.

Especially with all the fat kids snacking 24/7.

I'd go ahead and buy that umbrella policy to your homeowners insurance cause some kids parents are gonna sue.

Don't frick around with this. The extra hardware needed to get it right would not be worth saving the $30 it would cost you to rent a truck for 2 hours. Not only that, but there's probably people who would deliver you a beam for even cheaper.

Building a jungle gym sounds fun though, so good on you and good luck. Be sure to test it out thoroughly before the little tykes start climbing all over it.

PS: If I absolutely had to do it, I'd weave lots of 4 foot long 2x4s together with screws and glue. (think of how a butcher block looks and apply that look to your beam)

Nail you two small 2x4's onto opposite sides of your 4x6s. Just don't hammer your nails all the way in so you'll be able to pry them out.

not only no but hell no.

get the right size beam to go all the way across or you are asking for a visit and bill to and from the hospital for someone.

This is the correct answer- but fastened with nuts/bolts/washers. I'd also add wood glue/construction adhesive between the two.

Thanks for the advice.

I'm an amateur so I'm going with the above advice.

Are you talking about the beam that the swings will be suspended from? If so a 2x4 won't be enough over a 12' span

Definitely bolt it together. I missed the swing set part.

Lowes will deliver that shite. Go to a local lumber yard as well. Mine will throw whatever I need on their truck for $10.

Buy a blue handled board stretcher. Not the red one, the blue one

Also, be sure to buy extra level fluid in case your level runs out. You'll want this thing to be as level as possible
