New Passat TDI. Seriously great car. I drove one for a week a little while ago and I just did not want to go back to driving my (relatively new, and relatively nice) Xterra because that VW was just such a leap in interior quality, refinement and fuel economy that it was unbelievable. The articles I've read about the current gen Passat and the new Golf have all spoken volumes about how they feel so much more expensive than they actually are and that's no bullshite.
Really made me decide that my next vehicle will not be anything that gets less than 25 mpg combined unless I absolutely need the capability of something that gets less.

I have a 2015 Passat TDI SEL. Great car so far. I picked up from the dealer 12/24/15 and already have almost 16k miles
I drive a shitload for work
It really is a great car, but I do have some minor complaints (very minor really). The touch screen controls are SLOW, back up camera goes off if you change stations/mess with touch screen while in reverse and the cloth insert in the leather seats stain very easily.
Up until this most recent purchase, I had been a loyal top line Honda Accord guy. Drove even more miles with my previous job(s). I was really torn between sticking with the Accord and venturing off into a VW, but so far so good. The only things about the Accord I wish the VW had are some safety features like the passenger side mirror camera that shows your blind spot on the in-dash monitor when you put your right turn signal on and cruise control sensor that adjust your cruising speed if you get too close (or something like that). Accord also has a little too much functionality with it's radio, Pandora integration for my taste.
Also both will likely push the $30k cap pops is putting on the purchase. Especially the loaded (if that's what you go with) Accord.

I missed the Med school part the first time I responded and my advice has now been clarified.
1. Congrats on the marriage. Hopefully she is a patient and understanding woman because you are about to be AWAY from home a lot.
2. You will not have time to do anything but study for the next 4 years and then you will be in the hospital 7 days a week for your entire residency. You will not have ANY time to do any car maintenance at all. Med school and residency were the only times in my life that I took my vehicle to a mechanic.
3. You will have no free time to take the vehicle "off road" or on any adventures. Get a sedan.
4. In 7-10 years, you will immediately dump this NEW car once you get your first paycheck. (All of us do when we graduate from residency). You need a car that has a good resale value after 7 years.
TL;DR version - this guy says get the accord. You won't regret it.

I have a Passat tdi as well. A bit of advice unless you are going to do the maintenance yourself do not get this car. Dealer maintenance costs are crazy expensive and they want you to change the transmission oil at every 40k for the tune of about a grand each time.
I do the maintenance myself and it is only 200 dollars each time

New, I'd probably opt for the Nissan Rogue

Camry, Accord, Rav4 or CRV are your best options for long term reliability.

Was in your exact same position last year. Ended up getting a brand new Jeep Grand Cherokee for 29.5k
Can't go wrong with a fully loaded Camry or Ford Fusion though

Get a $20K car. Hookers and blow with the remaining $10K.

What year? I was very worried about maintenance costs when I was considering the car and dealer said (granted it was the dealer) unless you do everything they recommend each time (which you don't have to, just like any other vehicle) I was assured maintenance costs were not nearly that high. Former co-worker had the same car circa 2012 and confirmed the maintenance costs were relatively reasonable.

The crossover option is also growing on me. Think having a little more room than a car would be nice, and the ability to fold down the back seats would be huge.
Subaru. Outback, Forester, Crosstrek, hell, even Impreza hatch -- just pick the size you want.

Get a Civic and invest the rest.

20K on the car and save 10K for a good divorce lawyer. You'll want to upgrade the wife and the car when you get out of med school. Congrats on starting med school. It's a bitch.

looking around that price for a small SUV, I think we are leaning towards a pilot or 4runner. (going a little over, but it's a lease)
