If you're looking for a fast growing, tall, shade tree, Mexican Sycamore trees are the shite. I had one in the backyard of my last house that was the youngest tree (two red oaks and a red maple) in the yard, but grew the fastest and was taller than the red oaks that were at least 6 years older.

The home I had before the one I have now had 2 magnolias. Messiest trees ever. Fantastic shade. Messiness outweighs shade benefit. Would not recommend.

+1 for the red maple. I have 2 in my yard and they look awesome in the fall. Other than that, I have bald cypress, magnolias, and a few live oaks in my yard fwiw

These are my favorite as well. I've panted three of them in our yard. Don't get much in the way of fall color, but all three are beautifully shaped trees with a little work.

Pretty Fowering:
Natchez Crape Myrtle*
Bradford Pear (brittle and dumps debris a lot)*
Taiwan Flowering Cherry
Southern Magnolia*
Little Gem Magnolis (mini version)*
Star Magnolia*
Japanese Magnolia*
Vitex*
Dogwoods (must have shade)
Red Maples*
Eastern Redbud
Golden Rain Tree*

* = faster growing

Evergreen & Decidious Trees:

Live Oaks
Magnolia
River Birch - nice color but lots of leaf drop
Sycamore - good color but lots of leaf drop
Lacebark Elm
American Elm
Pistachio - great fall color
Cypress - both bald cypress and leyland do well in the south
Willow
Pines
Japanese Maple - takes the right soils and 50% shade

Neighborhood is filling in (new development) and looking to plant trees / shrubs in the back yard around the fence line for privacy. Fence according to HOA can't be taller than 6ft and the house is built up so when on the back porch, neighbors walking by can look right over the fence at us.

Any of the previous suggestions on nice trees/shrubs that offer privacy as well?

I like the japanese trees the most. Everytime I google a different tree, it is usually the japanese that intrigues me.

Oh yeah, I am piggy backing on this thread. I need some backyard trees. (Central, LA)

Savannah Hollies are good ones for making a hedge. Little Gem Magnolias, and Leyland Cypress.

As far as shrubs go: cleyera, Sweet Viburnum, Loropetalum, and Yew are probably the best ones to use.

How big is the yard? Can you post a pic?

Also, you GTFO. Obviously this guy doesn't want helpful suggestions. I've been saying river birch for 2 pages without the slightest acknowledgment.

Trees are like women. You want a slim trunk, top heavy, low maintenance, and provides you with lots of nuts.
