My advice. Rent in Metairie for a few years during residency. Don't do the commute to CHNO from Mandeville/Covington right now. Move to Mandeville or Covington when you are ready to practice and settle down.
If you HAVE to move and commute, don't look at anything north of I-12. Look mainly off of East and West Causeway approach. Do not go further west than Beau Chen Marina, or further east than Soult.

no no no no.... an hour commute is not sustainable as a resident. My wife just finished a peds residency, you will absolutely hate your life if you have to work 12-16 shift and then have to drive that far.
I'd look at St. Charles parish if you want a bigger house... still a hike to CHNO, but easier.

Madisonville is full. There is no more room. Lots of section 8 housing. Schools are violent and falling apart. You can’t even check the mail without risk of being murdered. Don’t move here.

Still waiting on a job. I might have to be moving to Houston, or possibly to Covington. Hoping to get offers next week (what they told me). I'm gonna rent out my current house, so that'll be some steady income.
I don't need much space, but I don't want to see my neighbors

Also to OP, the S to N commute is far easier that N-S. Much less traffic. And just going into Mandeville also much easier than all the way downtown. So your wife needs to step up.

I would not recommend Madisonville at all unless you work close by. Getting in and out during commute time is a nightmare. Schools are better in Mandeville anyways.

I used to do that commute. It was great seeing the traffic going into town in the morning, while I was headed north

It's off Old Pontchatoula Highway close to Hwy 22. Post your email and I'll send you the realtor link. Thanks!!!

You have to weight whats more important...if you're commuting and traffic/travel time is important you'll prefer something east of 190 and south of I-12.
You can look into Lacombe and still have less commute time to NOLA than you would from madisonville.
