Anyone had good luck with a drone for a kid that wants to move up from the chotzky cheap drones you typically find at Walmart, etc? Looking for under $200, so it's still going to be a beginner model.

Possibly. He's got a helicopter and has a tiny drone. He's pretty good with it. I have looked at a few, but hate when the one star reviews are the same number as 5 star reviews.

Bought one of these for my kid this year. Go check out the videos on you tube. Pretty sweet drone. You do need a cell phone to utilize the camera.

You might as well buy a $50 one because it’s going to crash with a quickness. For about $350, you can get a drone that has safety features and is 100 times easier to fly and maneuver. My 12 year old has never crashed a mavic pro mainly because it’s so easy to fly

First glance used units are only $100 less than brand new... I just need to come up with a way to justify the expense. Hmmm. We can use it on the farm and write it off?

Unfortunately, I do have a budget for this item. There is a hobby shop here that I might visit to see what they have to say.

All of the ones under $200 pretty much are (shitty) toys, so save your cash and buy a $35 Sky Vioer. However for $370 a Mavic Mini 1 is awesome. They’re super easy to fly, battery last a half hour and the camera is incredible. You’ll want to fly it as much as your son. It’s worth it.

Does the kid want the drone, or is it on Dad's secret list?

Buying a cheap drone is a complete waste of money. Reason to buy a drone is to shoot video or pics, which means you want something worth a damn because they are not a lot of fun to fly for anything other than recording cool shite unless you go all out with a FPV speed drone which will run you more than your budget as well. Save money for something like a DJI or buy him another Heli to keep up his skill, because piloting a RC heli takes true skill where camera drones any dipshit can fly.

What makes an aircraft that"any dipshit can fly" is a gps and the flight controller. Heli's can also come with gps and a flight controller that make it simple. Not all camera drones are easy to fly. A good flight controller and gps isn't cheap.

that type of RC heli isn’t going to be $200, you will need skill to pilot a decent $200 one

I wasn’t referring to FPV style speed drone aka racing drones as camera drones, those you can get for under $200 but when you add in a radio and an FPV setup, he will be over budget. You can go no FPV and maybe get under budget, but you will need a cheap radio.

if your camera style drone isn’t easy to fly, you bought something cheap and shitty. The whole point of a camera focused drone is to make it easy to operate to focus on getting the shot. Which is why I said don’t waste $200 on one.
