Those are crossovers.

If we start calling the Honda CR-V, Ford Edge, Chevy Equinox, or the new Nissan Pathfinder "SUVs", then I absolutely hate what SUVs have become.

Get a Subaru Outback wagon. Good mileage and better handling and passenger room than the CR-V. The 3.6L models can scoot, and Outbacks have incredible resale value.

If you want a mid sized SUV, your only options are the Toyota 4Runner or Nissan XTerra. I can personally vouch for the excellence of the 4Runner.

I couldn't care less what you call them.

She thinks Subarus are ugly... I wouldn't mind them but since it'll be hers primarily, she gets veto power on aesthetics.

I want a small SUV/crossover/whatever you call it.

I personally think that you should go with the RAV.... Maybe in a red/orange exterior color :)

We got a used Highlander for $25k, with 20k miles.
Wife loves it, and i don't mind driving it.

Don't get her an Acura MDX. She just wants it b/c its the fad thing right now.

MDXs are awesome. Doesn't fit the OP's criteria at all though.

Wife and I bought a Mazada CX-5 in December. We are very happy with it. We got the grand touring with all the extras for about 27.5

Second-highest safety ranking in the segment, just behind the Volvo XC60.

Wife's '14 Edge is the best car/suv we have bought, got the limited out the door with 0% for 33k. Gets 22 mpg in town, 28 on the road with the 300 hp V6.

We traded in a Denali and it's just as nice.

Anything by Subaru

Edit.:

Maybe a minivan? I love the wife's toyota Sienna. Hondas are nice as well. Great gas mileage and can haul a shitload of cargo
