The biggest towns/cities in NE Georgia are Gainesville(47K) and Athens(128K).

Beautiful. Not too far from Clemson I think. Some friends from ATL have a lake house there. We finally got to visit in May, SO much fun. Was too cool for watersports but took the boats over for lunch at the Lighthouse. So beautiful and peaceful.

Have stayed at the Brasstown Resort in YH a few times. Love that area as well. 30 minutes from Blood Mtn and an hour from two of the best driving roads, Cherohala Skyway and Tail of the Dragon.

Gainesville doesn't exactly suck. It's got a good vibe and Lanier is right there for some good striper fishing, although it tends to get really crowded really fast on the water in the summers. But Clarksville, Helen, Dawsonville, Dahlonega, and all the really awesome places are close enough that a short drive will get you into the heart of the mountains. (Although, like others have mentioned, Helen is best if you make a habit of avoiding it. Neat little tourist stop, but I wouldn't consider it a place I'd want to include as a regular haunt. The traffic there during the summer season will make you long for a nice relaxing drive on the interstates through Atlanta by comparison.)

Athens is a shitty dump.
Clemson, Seneca, Greenville, Asheville are nice places. Though Asheville took a serious pounding after the hurricane.

I’ve always wondered if Hendersonville NC was a decent place to live.
If it were me, upstate SC is where I would look

Waynesville, NC is a cool town. I think it’s the highest elevation town in NC.

East Jefferson is the highest.

Don’t know why I thought it was Waynesville. Wiki says it’s Beech Mountain at 5500 ish feet.

I’ve literally never heard anyone say South North Carolina.
I have relatives that live in Due West, South Carolina.
