I have friends who are regular tug/pushboat captains making well over $100,000 yr. Work 1/2-2/3 year.
Depending on the company, sure. Get on with a local one that’s just pushing barges up and down the river and you have a better shot at working with competent people. Get on with someone huge like Kirby and you’re tanking for 5ish years with a bunch of filth and uneducated assholes before you can make captain.
I was talking to a guy once on a tug who said the captain routinely would shite in a bucket and make the deckhands come up to the wheelhouse and empty the bucket into a garbage bag and bring it down to throw it away. They treat you like complete horseshite when you’re green.

Engineer
Mechanical if he can handle it, if not then go with civil or chemical. Actually all the engineering fields do well right out of college. Then go get an MBA.
Construction Mgt is also an option for those who cant handle all the physics.....Dynamcis, Fluids, Thermo, Heat, and Kinematics....it gets tough and if your aren't willing to dedicate yourself, it gets impossible.

Chem Engineer
Gets to hang out with the real baws (bawperators) and gets paid just as well without working shift work

lol becoming an M.D. in the state has become much more difficult now that oschner has paired with LSU meds schools. admission standards are much higher. what is high on the act for you? 28-31 or higher?
