Wife and I are looking for a quality baby monitor that provides a good clear picture but won’t break the bank.

Anyone have any ideas or brands they like?

I guess just siting there and watching the baby sleep for free isnt an option?

First thing you need to figure out is whether you want local closed loop (camera and monitor only connect to one another on their own private network) or whether you want something WiFi enabled. That’s a rabbit hole in and of itself. Once you’ve decided that, we can help a bit more.

Have three. They're the best we found.

We have the closed circuit type that just has a camera and a handheld viewer. I've been looking at Amazon to upgrade to something that I can look at on my phone as well. There are lots of options. We have the Hellobaby brand and it is fine for what it is.

My advice to you is pick a number and just buy one that is within that budget. They pretty much all do the same thing. "Break the bank" means something completely different from person to person. The ones with app connectivity seem to be around $100 - $150 with different options for screen size and resolution

I used a Nanit. Works seamlessly.

Baby gear lab helps break down your options... Monitors
I have the Vtech and it's alright. Battery life is really bad. There was a recall on their monitors, which they replaced with no prob. Maybe avoid that brand.

I prefer the closed loop with the separate monitor. As one with toddler twin boys, it would be difficult unlocking your phone and opening the app all in a delirious state multiple times throughout the night. Separate monitor is the way.

Nanit is great for home, but has a lot of features that aren’t used, but paid for. Haven’t had any issues with ours for the last 2 years.

Only issue with baby stuff these days is that everything is WiFi and it’s useful until it’s not. I’d recommend buying a cheap Bluetooth monitor and camera set up to use as backup and take with you when you travel.

The video is really not that important, unless this is to spy on the babysitter. For monitoring a baby the sound is more important.

I do like the little graph it makes to show a timeline of the night. Helpful so I know how shitty my day is about to be

Kinda. My boy is a noisy sleeper. It's nice being able to tell, with him in near pitch darkness, whether he's just making noise or whether he's waking up.

+1 on the DXR-8. That's the one we use. Not connected to the Internet so there's no hacking.

We have a Nanit. Works seamlessly on any device.

Has way more features than I ever use it for though.

While I appreciate why people have concerns about this in theory, the reality is that no one has an incentive to actually try to "hack" your baby monitor. Practically everyone claiming to be "hacked" was probably using an unsecured wifi network or an obviously basic app password. Reminds me of all of the people claiming their facebook was "hacked" when they actually fell for a phishing scam

Have a decent, not used elsewhere password for your wifi network. Have a decent, not use elsewhere password for your app. Anyone who does that will be just fine.

Baby monitors are cool but some of them can get really big.
