You can’t learn leadership from a book. You can’t say you want to be a leader and graduate from a class then expect others to follow your lead. You either have it or you don’t. It’s a gift like charisma. Effortless but powerful when deployed.

If you don’t have it, and the vast majority of us don’t, then just be a good right hand man if you want to get to upper echelons. But mind you, you won’t make it to the top and that’s OK. Only a few do.

There is no harm in using a book to help hone or refine leadership skills. Too many people, including those in this thread, seem to think that searching out other people’s opinions, experiences, or guidance is foolish. I couldn’t disagree more. I don’t have any specific ones to offer, I like to read biographies of people I admire. Sometimes it’s an overt message of something they have done, other times you just have to interpret and apply.

Someone once said that reading a book allows you to borrow someone else’s brain for a day. Avail yourself to that. The best leaders understand a range of opinions and viewpoints... then they make their decision.

Gridiron Genius - Michael Lombardi
Never split the difference - Chris Voss
The five dysfunctions of a team - Patrick Lencioni

A few good ones. Not sure if audiobook or not.

I hate to break this to you, but you can’t learn leadership from a book or tape; it is intrinsic to the leader. Now shut up and shine my shoes!

I’m not a big fan of business books, but if you want to be a better leader then read the principles of Servant Leadership.

This is an old, out dated thought of leadership. The most successful leaders have actually been non flashy and more reserved. These managers were better at maximizing potential and providing a team environment.

Leadership should be developed before you are in a position to manage a team. Leading without authority is a great start for everyone.

Charisma is for sales, and even that has limits when selling technical, complex products. If it’s expensive and important to your process, you’re going to want someone dependable and authorative and not just someone who tells a great dick joke.

This isn’t being a leader. You describe being a manager. Two separate things. Managers are not leaders but they like to give themselves the leadership nameplate. I disagree that this is leadership.

Ghengis Khan. Alexander the Great. George Washington. Napoleon. Jesus. And yes, even Hitler. These are well known examples worthy of the leadership designation. None of them took a class. It’s something special about them. The way they act, carry themselves, speak, and interact with others makes others want to follow. The leadership designation is thrown around too loosely IMO. You know a leader when you see it.

You can be a great manager but that is not synonymous with being a great leader.

I should also say being a great leader does not make you a great manager. Hitler was a shitty manager. He had good managers under him.
