My daughter and her friend are going through tonight and need to get a room in a safe area..what are the best areas? North of town would be good also..they are headed to Atlanta tomorrow.

Please do not stay anywhere along I-20 in Birmingham. It's pretty much all shitty all the way through town along that Interstate. Go I-459 around. Much better places, much safer, everything. Plus, it's shorter.
My first advice would be to stay off exit 19/ Hwy 280. Plenty of places to stay, plenty of restaurants, decent area.
ETA: Are you arriving from the Nashville area? If so, I'd either stay somewhere in Gardendale area, go through and and head East and stay in Leeds or even go to Pell City. Neither of those are as nice as the 459 corridor, but if you're coming from I 65 North, I 459 would be out of your way.

Bessemer, Ensley, Wylam come to mind.
Wait. Best areas for what?

They should get on 459 and stay near the 280 intersection. Close to the summit. Don’t stay off of 20/59.

Jump off the 459 interchange
Ride past Bessemer/McAdory and into Hoover
Better location
Don't follow 20 on North side

Agree with other poster. I-459 is the way to go. Either exit 10 or 19.

They would be very safe at Owlie’s.

In Tuscaloosa, either downtown by the river or just off 359 as you cross 20/59 (near skyland).

Why not just keep driving to ATL? It’s 2 hours. The weather is going to be shitty tomorrow morning anyways.
