Yeah - people who say NC isn't southern have no idea what they're talking about.

Go outside of the Charlotte or Raleigh areas to a place like Rockingham or Hickory. Your opinion will change instantly

Full blown Appalachia. Parts of Tennessee, North Carolina, Kentucky, and Virginia have them. West Virginia is 99.9% Appalachia.

I used to have clients in Lexington, Rocky Mount and Wilson, NC. Plenty of baws in those areas.

People here like to talk about how unique Cajun culture is (and it is) compared to the rest of the country, but the hills and hollers running across the Appalachians are just as isolated (maybe more so) and foreign to the rest of America.

Hillbillies are usually either one of the worst or best people you'll come across.

Very untrue. The MS coast draws more annual tourists than the Alabama coast and Pensacola, combined.

Truth but peel the onion.

99% of the Visitors to the Mississippi Gulf Coast fall into two overlapping categories:

A) Folks you would not enjoy being related to
B) Folks you would likely call the cops on

The wretched refuse who come to Biloxi to gamble/cruise the Coast/beach comb make Destin tourism folks thrilled there’s a Biloxi.

OP: There are parts and facets of every Southern State that are positive but probably the Land Mass has the worst overall average score to me.

Yeah there's an influx of LA/MS/AL weekenders, Northerners and Canadians. Much of the same crowd you see in Destin these days. CTC is getting bigger every year drawing more and more people from outside the region.

After Louisiana and the lower half of Arkansas I tend to agree.

I don't think this renders my point untrue.

Louisiana's cultural/tourism/business hub is New Orleans. A historically significant convention city with some decent sized companies and everything that goes with them (professional services firms, etc.).

Alabama's are Birmingham and Huntsville, not Mobile.

That the Mississippi gulf coast draws a fair number of tourists isn't enough to sustain a state. Quite simply, Mississippi has no business city of any national (or arguably regional) importance, and that's probably the most driving factor. It probably holds back Ole Miss and MSU as well.

New Orleans isn't a true business city either, but it's a first tier tourism city and close to a first tier convention city, which makes it a solid economic engine when combined with being a middling business town.

Now MS is not some great economic engine, but this statement is inaccurate. We have the Nissan plant, Toyota plant, Ingalls ship building, Nucor steel, Raytheon, multiple industries in the Golden Triangle, and the soon to be Yokohama plant. There are quite a few others as well.

We are not dependent on an out of state area for our economy. Unless you count federal entitlement dollars for the delta

The MS coast draws a ton of tourists annually.

Jackson has a lot more industry than Huntville. It just doesn't have the high paying job market of Huntsville.
