Louisiana should be a middle tier Southern state. It's just been run by corrupt morons for 100 years. It really wouldn't be that difficult to fix some of the problems either but we keep electing more of the same.

It is absolutely maddening

Louisiana is ruined by New Orleans. Except for 10 square blocks that place is disgusting.

And Jackson and the delta ruin Mississippi, Memphis ruins Tennessee, Montgomery ruins Alabama, etc.

Texas is the south? I don't consider WV the south unless you get close to the southern border. Being from WV we are called Yankees by Virginian's.

It is difficult to compare entire states, b/c they are so large and diverse. There are good and bad in all states, and there are parts of the one I ranked "worst" (Miss) that are better than parts of the one I think is "best". But taking everything into consideration, I would say:

Best:
1. North Carolina: Natural beauty of great beaches and mountains. Great economy. Great universities. Solid cities, both large (Charlotte and Raleigh) and small (Wilmington & Asheville).
2. Georgia: Also has a good combo of mountains and coast. Savannah is a gem, and Atlanta is a great economic engine. Points for the Masters.
3: South Carolina: great beaches/coast and Charleston and Greenville are nice.
4. Tennessee: Nashville is great. Some nice mountains. Lack of coast keeps it out of the top 3 for me.

Worst:
Mississippi: It has nice parts like the coast, but in general it is behind the other southern states IMO. Lags in terms of economy and education and lacks a great city.

I dont' really consider WV to be southern. If it counted, it would probably be the worst.

I don’t know a single person who thinks of Oklahoma as a southern state.

Not really, although obviously they make more out of it than those things.

I don’t know why anyone in Louisiana feels any kind of superiority over anything in Mississippi, other than LSU sports. I used to feel that way myself.

My wife and I grew up in Louisiana, met at LSU, loved it. We were living in Prairieville 15 years ago when I was recruited to a job up here, at first I said hell no, I ain’t going to no damn Mississippi, but after we visited we were all in.

GREAT place to live. Great people, homes and land affordable, the women, beautiful scenery, the women, the women, quality of life (traffic, weather, crime, etc) all far, far superior to anything in Louisiana. There is even a pretty health community of LSU fans in the area, it is fun.

Yes, we have a shithole major city; Louisiana sees our shithole with New orleans and raises with Baton Rouge. When I left BR it was taking me nearly an hour to get home from OLOL to Prairieville. I have probably been to my last game in Tiger Stadium (the A&M beatdown), coming back to Baton Rouge just sucks so bad now.

If you run Mississippi down and have never been up here, do us a favor and DON’T VISIT!

Schools are very good up here, with great private options. Memphis and Birmingham within easy drive, you can have the big city highlights without having to live in the shithole.

We love Louisiana and LSU, we have a lot of family there, but we ain’t never going back. We were talking recently about this, there is NOWHERE in Louisiana that we would leave here for.

Make fun of Mississippi all you want!

Louisiana has a significant cultural/tourism/business hub and Mississippi does absolutely nothing of the sort. Mississippi's primary job/economic engine is probably a 4th rate dump of a city in another state.

That Louisiana might do less with more is a fair point, and perhaps Mississippi is overachieving. But Mississippi still isn't ahead of LA.

Best:

North Carolina - Even as a Tennesseean, I'll admit that its the best state. North Carolina's mountains and mountain towns are the best in the South. They've got nice beaches and great cities, big and small (Charlotte, Research Triangle, Asheville, Outer Banks, Boone, Pinehurst, Cashiers, Blowing Rock). Top to bottom, the universities are great (Duke, North Carolina, Davidson, Wake Forest, Elon, NC State, etc.) North Carolina is a progressive and forward-thinking state, yet, they are still moderate and very conservationist focused.

Worst:

Mississippi. Not a knock as I like visiting Oxford and Natchez, the Mississippi coast has charm, I love blues music, and they have great "home cooking," but it seems like Mississippians are content with their current conditions. They have sort of a "well...this is it" attitude.

Best: NC, GA, TN, in that order.

Worst: MS, LA, AL, AR, in that order.

North Carolina is most definitely a southern state, and it is one of the most interesting and beautiful states in the country.

Once you get out of the major metros there are some straight up hillbillies in NC. I pulled over to ask one for directions a few years ago because my GPS wasn't working and I could barely understand that ole baw
