This person gets called "sir" a lot, but I think it's on account of the Birkenstocks...

I was an officer in the Navy, so I was getting called "Sir" in my twenties.

I never understood this. I call anyokk ne I am unfamiliar with "sir".
Boss, or waiter at a restaurant. Doesnt make a difference to me.

“No Sir!” from your mom usually means you can do it two more times before she loses her shite.

I call everyone older than me who I know sir and all strangers sir and Ma’am.

This is a perfect example of bad manners.

I started hearing it when I turned 30 and it was weird. Twenty years later you get used to hearing it and not weird to me anymore.

Agreed. I’m 43 and I even say “yes sir” to a ten year old. It teaches respect.

I mean, if it's like a military-style or child to parent style "sir" then sure it's weird
But I'll throw a "thank you sir" to a 16 year old kid handing me my groceries, so a lot is in the approach, I think

I’m 25 years older than my students and I more often than not say sir and ma’am to them.
Don’t take it personally. That’s some Yankee shite.

I just turned 50 and I am still not comfortable being called Sir. On the other hand I use Sir and Ma’am with everyone.

I’ve worked with some clients in Chicago over the last few years. I offended a “lady” .... for replying “yes ma’am”. I didn’t give a shite, but she was offended nonetheless...
It’s definitely a regional thing these days...

I am 37 and still say sir and ma’am. Out of respect. I don’t think I expect it, at all. When friends kids say “Miss Liz”, it’s cute.
I agree it's cute with kids do that.
I feel oddly conflicted when older black folks call me "Mr. (first name)." I think it's old school cool, but todays PC world wouldn't get it.

I'm closing in on 66 in a week and have been getting called sir for a while now. I think most of it started when I started turning gray in my late 40's. I'm past gray now and look more like the original Colonel Sanders in hair color. Let's just say there's snow on the roof.

If I'm called sir, I gently correct the person and asked to be called El Patron.
