Sounds like he was raised correctly. You say sir to anyone that is older than you

I put a six pack on the register counter and the cashier asked to see my ID. I laughed and thanked her for thinking I was a kid. She said, "Sir, you have your checkbook out, I need ID if you're writing a check."

The older black man at our work cafeteria calls me Miss Liz and I call him Mr. Will. He is really cool.

In South Sir and ma’am are far more common for sure. I guess the fact that this guy is only 15 years younger than me made it feel weirder.

Ill refer to a 21 year old employee of mine as “sir” in instances like when they thank me for something. I’ll say “yes sir”

I do that a lot now that I think of it

Every time I get told “You don’t have to call me ‘Sir’ or ‘Mr.’” I reply, with a demure smile “My daddy taught me I better respect others, even people like you...”

Sir I feel like is much more common from a younger age. It’s basic manners so you’ll hear it in any customer service role even in your teens from people of all ages.

Mister is the one that makes me feel a little old. It’s less common, generally only when a friend or collegue’s kids are around and doesn’t really start until post college. It’s happened for years now though so I don’t really consider it weird anymore.

I barely notice when someone calls me sir but for some reason when people, especially my friends kids, call me Mr Stripes, it makes me want to climb the wall. I just can’t stand it.

People who make a big deal when someone calls them sir/Mr. are fricking idiots.

I especially hate when you say Mr. Smith and they’re like call me Jim, Mr. Smith was my dad.

You know what, just stfu and accept that the person is trying to be respectful.

Mr. (First Name) is a good compromise.

Yankees have no manners.

People, especially in the Northeast, can come across as rude to people from other regions, but it's not accurate to say they have no manners. Just different cultural norms and expectations of what constitutes "good manners".

I call people younger than me sir and ma'am. I don't even think of it as an age thing. Although it would be weird to call a 10-year-old sir.
