"Sonic Ice" machine is refered to as a "Flaker". I can confirm that the Hoshizaki brand is highly regarded in the ice maker world. Scotsman and Manitowac are pretty good also!

People with sonic ice love it. But heard you have to clean them more often.

I have a shaved ice maker (undercounter) and after I installed a really good inline water filter I did not have to clean it as often.

I love it for regular drinks. I also bought some silicone 2.5" square cube ice trays from Amazon for my whiskey and scotch drinks. I doubt there is a company that makes a machine that produces ice that big. I dont need that many cubes at a time, since I am not an alcoholic.

Wish I had one that made Sonic ice.

Save $5k. Buy bitchin' water filter. Install bitchin' water filter. None of that Brita shite. Reverse osmosis, baby! Buy Scotsman Brilliance nugget machine. Install. Profit.

you sonic ice guys, what alcoholic drinks do you drink with that ice?

Everything. Mixed drinks, martinis, shots. It's great to chill things, very little melt-age.

I do vodka on the rocks. I like it b/c I don't want the water melting ruining my high quality Taaka. I have a friend who bitched that his ice didn't melt fast enough for his scotch on the rocks so I gave the moron a splash of water and he was good to go.

But any type of mixed drink the Sonic ice is perfect for IMO and works just fine on the rocks

Hoshizaki under counter. Hat shape.

Life is good. I'm always ready for a beverage emergency.

Here's what I have. Nugget ice is chewable like sonic ice but doesn't melt as fast. Best of the options I think.

I just installed a Hoshizaki Undercounter Nugget Ice machine, but I haven’t determined what kind of filter to put on it. I don’t have a ton of room in the space under the counter/cabinet, but I want to do something.

What in line filters/types do you recommend?

A commercial unit really only makes sense if you are filling up ice chests daily during hunting season, if you fish a shite ton, or work a job that requires buying ice daily. If not, it’s kind of overkill.

All that being said, nugget ice is great for drinks. Flaker is also chewable, but will melt quicker. Half cubes are best for filling ice chests.

SubZero makes weird (but crystal clear) hexagonal shapes. Expensive and THE LOUDEST APPLIANCE I HAVE EVER OWNED. Would not recommend.

They do break a lot without proper maintainance. However, I imagine the employees usually just don’t want to fill and clean the machines a lot, because it involves work to properly sanitize and lubricate the moving parts. Also, most employees can’t figure out breaking them down and putting them back together.

If you want a home unit, get a Taylor 142.

I know a guy that has about 20 Scotsman nugget ice machines in a warehouse for sale. Some are still under warranty.

I spec'd a Hoshizaki some 18 years ago from Southern Commercial Products in Harahan. They put in a fancy dual-cartridge filter system in the water supply. As far as I know that machine is still there... might want to contact then to see what they suggest. LINK

Breaking it up with the scooper is exactly what I do. Like someone said, it’s more of a first world problem but I just like to make sure it’s all broken good, otherwise it jams up in your glass.

Kind if comparing it to a Whirlpool ice maker that we had at a condo in Destin this summer that made some really nice full thickness square cubes that were all separate and shoveled well with the scooper and lasted a long time.

Just because of this I’m going to plan on cranking up the thickness on mine tomorrow and see how it goes.

I've been considering getting an under the counter one put in. The ones in refrigerators suck.

Be warned, the under the counter small ice makers are very problematic. In fact, you just as soon pay for a full one due to price difference but mainly the cost for repairs of the under counter machines. Good luck.

1. Hoshi
2. Manitowac
3.........................
I own several of each. Hoshis work like crazy, especially an older one if you can get your hands on them. Manitowac work well also. Some people rate these things like they love their trucks so be careful. In my opinion from owning them for 20 years, Hoshi then Manitowac. I speaking from owning commercial sized ones, not under the counter ones. I'd never purchase an under the counter one.

I went to Mobile Fixture here in town (restaurant supply house) and bought a commercial filter that is used on large ice machines (like 450 pound boxes). I dont remember the name but the replacement filters run about $30 and last me about 6 months.

I think the housing was about $150 but that is a one time deal. Dont forget to install a water cut off right at it to make it easy to change.
