So we should make a law that pushes the trucks driving from one state to another, or "interstate traffic" if you will, to some road other than Interstate 10?

Yes, that "some other road" being another 'Interstate' I-110. It will add an extra 20 minutes to their haul across the country.

I'm asserting it's not "literally impossible" to get across town without using the interstate

That's great but that's not what I said.

That's called a qualifier.

False. It is literally impossible to get from one side of the city to the other in any kind of reasonable time without using the interstate. There are 19 ( yes, nineteen) stop lights on Florida Blvd. between O'Neal and Acadian. Even if there were no cars on the road, traversing the city East to West takes 20+ minutes.

It really boils down to the fact that the city was poorly designed and now is poorly maintained. The problem now is that there's not enough money and enough to do what needs to be done.

In addition to that, we have the good ole boy system running the city instead of giving the construction work to the best company.

Agreed.

Plus there is no creativity or long-term thinking when it comes to solving traffic problems. Are there any intersections within the city that aren't addressed by either a stop sign or traffic light?

Right and that isn't entirely accurate either. I go all over town on a regular basis in a reasonable amount of time. Obviously there are some roads I wouldn't use, which sucks, but I can get to where I need to 90% of the time without using the interstate in a more than reasonable amount of time.

You cannot get from the East side of the city to the West side of the city quickly. It's less than 12 miles and it will take you at least 30 minutes regardless of the number of cars on Florida. It's the same thing for Airline Hwy - which runs from South to North.

Yes, I can go five miles down Jefferson Hwy. quickly at certain points of the day but that isn't the point of my post. We need at least one expressway that runs East-West and one the runs North-South in BR that isn't I-10/12.

The problem isn't contained to cars on the road (although that is a problem.) It's the actual design of the roadways throughout the city.

There's got to be something in the air that makes people stupid. That, or DMV needs to make IQ testing mandatory for issuing drivers' licenses.

I know of one by the new Woman's Hospital.

That's my point.

Or better than a round-a-bout, how about making Florida Blvd. and Airline Hwy right/U-turn only? This works wonders in other major cities.

We're in general agreement. All I was doing was refuting an inaccurate blanket statement.

Which was neither a blanket statement nor inaccurate.

I specified traveling from one side of the city to the other - not randomly driving around while doing errands.

All that did was speed up the process, hopefully we've reached a tipping point and will do something with the interstate system

Along that vein...I would fully support an innovative law which would place a ban on interstate driving for any and all morons that CAUSE wrecks due to cell phone issues, general stupidity/inattention etc !
i.e. vehicular damage of any kind...3 month ban, injury involved...1 yr. ban
License plate reader detects your vehicle on the interstate = automatic revocation and heavy fine...can all be done electronically

OK. Well I go from the Garden District to Goodwood/Tara and back regularly and in a very reasonable amount of time. Maybe you should specify further. Or maybe that isn't "one side of town to the other" within your definition

I still agree with you that Florida and Airline should be made into legitimate highways/freeways of sorts in certain areas.

I am all for legislation that punishes dumb drivers. You would think the fear of injuring yourself/others and damaging your property would be enough of a deterrent, right? It isn't. I don't know what punishments there can legally be, but there needs to be more consequences than just your insurance company paying for others' losses.

Obviously, we can't prevent wrecks that happen because of Acts of God, such as a deer jumping out in front of you or whatnot. But you can prevent stupid from taking the wheel, let's just see how far we can take it.
