Have them watch The Wire S4.

BR is really tough for schools
On one hand you have the public schools where you run the chance of your kid being friends with a child named “Cash” or “Shanquisha”. He will grow up wanting a charger and doing burnouts at midnight on the streets of BR.
The other option is a private school where they will be friends with “Braxton” or Brynnleigh”. And you’ll be forced to join a travel ball team.
Truly a dilemma

My son went to a private school from pre K through 8th grade but his school closed down. He got into BR Magnet High so we sent him there. He made straight A’s but hated it there and missed playing baseball. Lee Magnet now Liberty was starting a sports program. He transferred to Lee Magnet after freshman year and started in baseball for two years. A lot of culture at Lee but not nearly like other EBR schools. My son got into more mischief than his African American teammates because most of the parents were involved and strict.
Very limited social options for a middle classed white kid at either BR High or Liberty. At BR High you will not fit in with the kids there because most are weird and you are in the minority at Liberty.
I will say that Liberty did prepare him well for college as he is pulling a 3.8 GPA. He is at LSU now and in a fraternity so not hurting on the social scene.

EBR has some really good magnets. Your kids have to score 40th percentile + and maintain at 2.5 gpa. Elementary: Westdale Academic Magnet, Mayfair Magnet (K-8), BR FLAIM, and BRCVPA Middle School: Sherwood Magnet, Mayfair Magnet, and McKinley Magnet High School: Baton Rouge Magnet High
Perhaps someone can come along with hard numbers, but I get the feeling that these public schools are becoming ever-increasingly difficult for children to get into; both due to population growth as well as preferential admission criteria that favors some over others, and perhaps even other reasons, such as the marked decline in the quality of the standard public school educational environment and curriculum.
Im glad that I got out of the area.

Our youngest went to one of the larger private schools in BR from PK-8th and then to BR High. She likes BR High much better but I can see how that school wouldn't be a good fit for everyone. It just depends on the kid I guess. I don't think our older one would have liked it.

I have a brother that went to Broadmoor and he became an MD. My ex sister also went there and she’s an optometrist.
They probably graduated early 2000s or before. Broadmoor, Woodlawn and Lee in the late 90s/early 2000s were the last regular EBR public schools to have white kids who weren’t previously kicked out of private school. Plenty kids from those schools from that time have done just as well as private school kids. It’s rare if that happens now.

Mayfair is a good public school. I’ve heard good things about Basis if you’re into the charter route.
I think that’s about it.

There are good public schools in EBR Parish. They’re called Zachary and Central schools. Totally separate from EBR school board which is why they’re two good school districts.

There are good options if you’re comfortable with your children head butting an under privileged youth’s knuckles
This hit close to home. Got suspended for this exact thing happening due to "Zero tolerance" and I was involved in a "fight" for some under privileged youth getting head butted in the fist when I bumped into him in the hallway on my first day of middle school. But hey, they separated us from the gen pop in our gifted classes. PE and lunch were hell though.

I'm admittedly not that young anymore but Broadmoor, Lee, Tara, Belaire, Woodlawn were normal schools when I was in HS. I went to Central but it was a regular EBR school too at the time and it was fine. It's sad that pretty much all of those are trash now other than Central

Flaim is shite. My wife taught there. Shitty parents and shitty administration. She was forced to pass kids. Second graders could refuse to take tests and she was forced to give them a 70.

Short of BRHS or UHigh, your belief is incorrect.
It’s truly unreal how horrible the public school system is in BR. If you can’t afford private school for your kids and you love them, move elsewhere.

This is true...I have friends with kids there and from what I've been able to gather, there are a lot of "he/she/they" type freaks there.

My kid went to Sherwood Middle then BRMHS. I was impressed with the teachers and academic rigor. Kid graduated with honors and got an academic full ride and just finishing freshman year in an engineering program. Highly recommend both schools.

I would give me left nut to go back to the 1980’s Broadmoor and Tara HS. Now, I’m glad that I live 25 miles away from the hoodlums.

Definitely curious about the status of Charter schools around here in BR. I know BASIS out by Women's Hospital has a good reputation. Wondering if IDEA and the new Great Hearts (Bluebonnet extension) are supposed to be decent.

The terrible public schools is a large reason that Ascension Parish has blown up.
