Greatest Baton Rougean of all time. I grew up in Lafayette, but watched him every time I was over in BR to visit my grandparents. Caught the show in its last years in the '80s, did a Monday Morning March or two around the living room.

I had no idea then that he'd been doing the show for 30 years and was the last man standing from a time when every city in America had its own local kids' show host. Bill Black outlasted them all. When he finally hung it up in '88 his show was one of the very last of its kind left. Might have been the last. God bless this guy.

Yep, and was on his show once. I won a city wide art contest and was invited to the show. I was like a deer in the headlights in front of the camera. Scared as hell. Being on his show while in elementary school, especially alone on the stage with him, was epic at the time. You felt every set of eyes in BR were on you. Star for a day.

He wasn't no Policarp Pecko Number 2, or something like that on the Lafayette channel in the morning back in the late 60's and 70's. Always trying to catch "Ole Blue", the catfish on the bayou. Damn beat me to the punch.

Every region had something similar. In SW LA we had Cowboy John on from the Port Arthur Station. I think that Laffy had Polycarp but we couldn't catch it.

It was a great time to be a kid in BR . 1975 - 1990 were the best times as far as I can remember.

That dipshit motherfricker destroyed Baton Rouge High.

He sat on or presided on the School Board that threw the academic standards out because the school's black student body was 2% lower than the black population percentage of Baton Rouge. He said it was unfair that black students were underrepresented there (again, 2%) and didnt do as well at McKinley. i.e. Academic standards are raciss.

So, instead of figuring out what worked at BRMHS and implementing it at the other schools, he saw it fit to remove the academic standards.

And yes, the show kicked arse. I watched it as a kid. Broke my heart to see him turn out to be a liberal dipshit douche...and I didnt even know what a liberal was yet.

I forget which school board member it was that was discussing every student learning equally. They said they were unable to bring the standards, or averages, up, so they were going to "shave the top off of the mountain."

This, along with Judge John Parker was the death bell ringing for Baton Rouge education. The 1980's was a race to the bottom.

What is the name of your book? I would be interested in reading it. I remember what happened and always thought your dad was pretty badass for what he did. Truly a legend.

My uncle was a cameraman for WAFB. One time he had to go to BB's house for some reason and my aunt and I tagged along(I was maybe 8-9 at the time).

Can remember being totally star struck as I was sitting in BB's kitchen eating cookies and drinking juice
