I see it's on Government street. What's the neighborhood like there? My kid has to go there for Orchestra practice in January. What should I expect?

It’s not a terrible area but I would definitely look over my shoulder while walking outdoors around there.

Much like many urban areas, it is fine but don’t wander off without knowing where you are going. A couple of blocks north and the neighborhood changes quite a bit.

Compared to 20 years ago, it’s a great area.

It's fine. It's kind of on the edge of a really nice area and a bad one but it's being rapidly gentrified. I wouldn't worry about sending your kid there.

It's a beautiful school too

It has been gentrified with asiago and gorgonzola; Fedoras and vapes; and record stores. You are safe.

Lots of kids likely to be much smarter and more accomplished than your kid? A gorgeous school ? A gentrified neighborhood full of restaurants, bars and funky, white hipsters?

Somebody was killed at a restaurant just down the street a while back. You may just want to tell her to skip it. Sure would suck to get shot when you don’t need to.

It's a top 5 school in the state too. It's not in the hood but there are some sketchy neighborhoods nearby.

That area is pretty busy though and there are million dollar homes a few blocks away. OP just needs to tell his kid to use common sense and he/she will be fine.
