Any insight on DCS position at BASF in Geismar? I know it's union and that they are currently negotiating a new contract so all details may not be known. Mainly looking to see if anyone knows about their vacation and pay scale. Been a plant baw for about 15 years and being forced to look for new employment, current plant will be shutting down. Not too worried about starting over as far as wage goes, but definitely not wanting to take a major step back as far as vacation time.

They don't make DCS positions. They make DCS positions better.

I don’t work for them directly, but I frequently deal with people who do and they seem to like it there.

That’s about all I have to offer

I think that was a Dow slogan…. BASF ‘creates chemistry’

BASF used to be “we don’t make products, we make them better”

Or something along those lines. Then it changed to “we create chemistry”

DCS position

That a board man? As in, you're controlling and monitoring the process via the computer through DCS?

Tangentially, I spent a day interviewing there for an IT position decades ago. The problem isn't BASF, it's the rest of the plants, particularly Honeywell, nearby, that produce toxic shite (Anhydrous HF, Chlorine, etc.)

Those plants are going to kill you, not the Melamine BASF makes.

DCS is basically the guy behind the computer that the board man looks at.

Meaning, the guy that improves and tweaks the DCS for the board man?

The guy who comments out the code that is there to raise alarms when shite gets outta spec, causing shite to blow up.

Or so I've heard.

Gotcha. I have experience with engineers that are good with DCS and some that just collect a paycheck. A good program engineer can make a board man's life a helluva lot easier.

Dow had the worst slogans. Examples:
- Dow Lets You Do Great Things
- What Good Thinking Can Do (which we morphed into "What good can thinking do?"

Meanwhile, Dupont had the hands down winner - Better Living Through Chemistry.
