quote:so much incorrect info here.
a 9 year old level, pitches are coming in 35-45 mph, which means there is a noticeable arc in the pitch. They are going to want to swing up with the bat not level and not rolling the wrists. This is going to cause some pop-ups and/or pulling to opposite field. Teach him to keep the bat close to his ear, not up and away. Drive the butt of the bat forward, level swing (do not drop the end). Open up hips after contact point.
Barrel below hands
Left side under
Swing in plane not flat
And the hips go prior to the bat, that is how leverage and power are created.

and to all those trying to convince the guys stuck in the 1980s.....ignore them.
i mean these guys think 9u kids are throwing 35....they do not understand and you wil never convince them otherwise.
you should never spend money on your kid to help them be better at something they love, you are only allowed to spend money on the hunting camp and beer. how dare you like something other than that and how dare you raise a kid that likes something other than that.

Hell, we are leaving after basketball practice today to drive 6 hours for him to play baseball on Sunday.
We do lessons for glove work as I know nothing about modern defense techniques in the infield. Hitting I handle most of it until he needs specific help...as he does right now. You just got to find a coach that fits what you want.
Some talk too much, some only chunk balls, some only do drills, some watch too much video.....more than anything, your kid needs to feel confident in what they are doing. As they get older and its coming in quick with good offspeeds...the number one thing you better be is confident.
For arm strength, the number one thing they need is time off throwing. Months.

1. Bat speed.
2. Bat to ball skills
3. Swing decisions.
If you can only develop 1 thing develop the ability to swing the bat fast. With proper mechanics.

There's a guy named Greg Lofton who is affiliated with the Blue Jays baseball organization out of Lafayette area. We have always been impressed by how he conducts himself and coaches his teams. Hit him up on Facebook and see if he does lessons or who he recommends. I don't personally know him at all or have any affiliation with the organization just going by what I have seen at the fields.

None of that matters until the hit puberty
That will separate the men from the boys

9u competitive travel ball will see speeds from 42 on low end to 55ish on the extreme high end. primarily will be 46-52.

maybe Rec ball
My son's 9u team had five kids throwing low 50s and we were a middle of the pack AAA team. 9u is 46 feet. Low 50s is not arcing in

bullshite. seen plenty of kids bringing 55+ from 46 feet and they are blowing it past the kids, can hit spots, have a change up and by 10 have a curve

nothing at all, but according to the OT there is. should never spend money on sports....like ever.

agreed

disagree. key is building strength and stability and never ramping up throwing without a 6-8 week on ramp. nothign wrong with throwing all year around, pretty proven at this point.

last year at both NITs we did, we saw atleast 5 pitchers in each that were 60+
we were high aaa/low majors and we had 3 kids throwing 55+ and all 5 of our primary pitchers threw 52+ by the end of the season. now that was the top end. mainly 2 sat 48-51 and then 3 sat 52-54.
i can tell you storm had 3 kids 55 plus, we had 3, swamp donkeys has 2 or 3, monroe bulldogs has 2, pelicans had 1, clay harris's kid for the stros threw 58, traction black had 2 or 3, carrolton boosters has 1.
when we played in houston, most of the better teams had multiple kids hitting 55+.

Pocket radar has made most Dads absolutely intolerable.
Large data collection shows most 9s throw 40-50, the average 44.

There are national 2030 kids that can top 60, but they are extremely rare and most are hold backs or have extremely favorable birthdays in May or such.

that's nuts if true. wonder if any are grade leveled. We saw one kid on a team out of fairhope area that was hitting 56-57 at the end of the season at a W.S. we went to.

Especially when your kid is growing quickly.
Driveline at 9 is a great way to introduce yourself to a surgeon.

i dunno about the houston kids, but most of the louisiana kids were not. like the ones on our team, none were grade hold backs.
not gonna lie it was shocking how fast many were bringing it.

I refuse to get into the bullshite rec is terrible. Baseball is baseball. I have seen the worst coaching and playing ability at the AA fields at travel tournaments. Everything that is wrong with the sport is on display.
Every pitcher I see at Dixie would be a Sunday guy on those teams.

Not saying it doesn't matter now, however, puberty and desire to work will change a lot of players. Mine went form 5'4" 125 as a freshman to 6'1" 185 with a 6"3" wingspan as a senior with the second highest squat/ deadlift.
Wingspan mattered as he threw sidearm and the lower he could get and extend made it harder for batters to pick up. But from 9U to 13U he was an above average AAA player.
I saw several kids who absolutely threw gas at the youth level never really develop into a pitcher. Same for kids who wrecked 200-300' fences with a Demarini Zen -5 hit 1 HR their entire 4 years of HS and couldn't hit oppo or bunt because their shitty travel coach wanted to dick measure trophy counts instead of teaching baseball.
Posted on 10/21/22 at 9:34 am to tigerfoot
There are terrible travel teams out there. The alternative is having more terrible kids playing rec. AA ball is not good ball.

quote:You are quoting the exceptions to prove the rule. Most 9u kids are in the 40s. It is just data. You are talking about the best kids on better squads around the country. Again, look at some of the national 9s from PG...you dont see many in the high 50s and very few in the 60s..and the two I looked at were 10 years old for the majority of the season.
