I am shocked that this has not been posted. How to swing a baseball bat by Kige Ramsey

OR

My dad taught me to switch-hit. He and my grandfather, who was left-handed, pitched to me everyday after school in the back yard.

I batted lefty against my dad and righty against my granddad. -Mickey Mantle

There's a lot of people out there with some college experience, or they are older gentleman rooted is particular hitting instruction from days gone by.

If you feel his needs exceed your ability to teach, I'd first suggest an honest look at where he is currently regarding his mechanics. A hitting coach is going to spend a few sessions watching and feeling out aspects of your kids swing that you can easily learn on youtube and teach yourself, while increasing you understanding of the swing and the modern, core concepts that good hitters need to display. Another aspect of a hitting coach at a young age is they teach the same thing to every kid that walks in the door, regardless of experience.

Feel, timing, rhythm, athleticism and flow all outweigh "mechanics i learned from a hitting instructor". You can get your kid to a base level without an instructor.

Start here as a resource

If your kid likes other sports, don't sacrifice them in the name of baseball. Increasing athleticism at his age is much, much more important than a hitting coach at 9 years old. Proper hitting mechanics, especially as he ages, is entirely a result of a power based process rooted in athletic movement.

The people telling you he is just 9 have no clue what they are talking about. Mechanically, he is behind if you haven't been driving in the basics. Most kids have 5-6 years of experience by this point. I teach mine the three basic points of hitting then work tee, soft pitch then pitch from the mound. Get those lessons.

I hope this and all of the usual OT responses are said tongue in cheek. A hitting coach for a nine year old? Give me a fricking break.

All things you can learn/teach yourself at 9.

Teach him the proper load. That's probably the most important thing to have drilled into him. A true load. Have 100% of the weight on the back leg, with rotation around the femur. He should feel the stretch in his arse and lower back, if he's loaded correctly.

Get him doing this for every single pitch, before he knows if it's a ball or a strike.

From there it's a simple motion of firing the back hip out of the load, and popping your wrist back (knob of the barrel should be pointing at the pitcher).

Just doing those two things will take you through 75% of the swing.

Yes, the back shoulder will be lower than the front (it should be). The hands will be above the barrel of the bat (it should be). And the bat path won't come through parallel to the ground.

Most people try to get kids to swing "level" but a pitcher isn't throwing level. Having the correct bat path will keep the barrel of the bat through the zone longer, and keep it on plane with how the ball is traveling much much longer.

From there, make sure the top half is staying connected. Good drill is placing one of those bouncy balls (smaller than a basketball) under the back arm pit. That ball shouldn't fly out until the follow through. That will give a visual of the top half staying connected.

At a 9 year old level, pitches are coming in 35-45 mph

Maybe in Rec, they coming 50+ in aaa, 60+ in high level majors and they already painting corners and have a legit change up.

If you are willing to drive to lake Charles, Austin Nagle does them and is really good.

Do yourself a favor and go watch a 9u majors super nit tournament in may and tell me those kids are killing the ball and don’t take hitting lessons.

Kids take instruction from someone other than their parents much better and if you go watch high level travel, all the kids have been taking lessons since they were 6 for the most part. Few exceptions but in general most are.

Same with pitchers.

They all start at 6 and stay through ha atleast. Hell I know some college guys who still see their coach when on break.

It’s nuts, I fricking hate what it has become but nothing I can do about it. And to be honest usually the best players go to lifting, pitching, fielding and hitting lessons atleast once a week. Its fricking nuts.

I've been taking my son to Matt Gambill at USA Prime Baseball, which is now located in Harahan since he was about 10 and we live about an hour and a half from Harahan. Matt is a great teacher and he teaches a very aggressive style of hitting - big load with the front leg, using the ground as leverage and what I would call an upward swing plan. I realize that's not in your area but Matt teaches several guys from all over LA and MS and he teaches many college guys. He used to be affiliated with the Knights.

I know he teaches several guys from the Lafayette area and one in particular is Tyler Lejune from Iato who was once an LSU commit and switched to Arizona. He also taught Cade Beloso before Paul M. totally screwed him up at LSU.

I played D! baseball in the late 80s, early 90s and then coached D1 baseball for a couple of years and there was no way I was will going to teach my son the outdated swing I had and coached.

TEE WORK

I can't say this enough. Most people overlook it, but I've fixed so many issues in hitters with tons of tee work.
