Barnes and Noble - Citplace Baton Rouge -90’s edition

I went back today just for memories. I didn’t know it closed relocated. I had so many memories in that place in the 90’s. I was getting my career started and that would be like my 2nd home at lunch and sometimes weekends.

I could remember getting me a Starbucks coffee, finding a bunch of self-help books, take the escalator upstairs and looking at the murals of historical authors on the wall and then just escape.

The new location just doesn’t have that feeling.

You can never go back but I’m glad I was there.

Used to work there as seasonal help (along with the shithole Jason’s Deli). Hated both jobs.

Anywho - one day the manager who I became buds with asked me to take 10 boxes of someone’s books to Laffy to get signed by the author. I’m from Houston so didn’t really know the famous photographers etc.

So I take the books in B&N Laffy right before closing and tell the Laffy manager I’m here to get these books signed. Take them to the guy and we start talking and talking and talking (kinda like this story ) while he is signing them. After I loaded the books back in the car for the return back to BR, it’s the author who asked if I wanted to grab something to eat. It was late and I hadn’t eaten and said sure.

It was C.C. Lockwood. Such a cool mofo he is. Was honored to have had that special time with such a talented dude.

ETA: Jason’s Deli can suck a bag of dirty d*cks.

You know - things just feel different and surfacy.

It just felt like things that we don’t took for granted had real meaning.

I can still smell those old Barnes & Nobles. Escape is the right word.

Now everything is all the same corporate veneer.

Yes indeed! The old Barnes & Noble being 2 stories made it special.

Too bad Citi Place was so poorly designed & fragmented.

I used to love browsing the CD section. They had a really good one, especially in jazz.

I don’t think it’ll ever be retail again. Maybe gets converted into some kind of specialty medical clinic or something? Or torn down so something purpose-built can go in its spot.

Met him at the bookstore in St Francisville when he was dropping off some books. Very nice guy.

It was pretty funny watching all the people from the Viking cruise trip in the bookstore thumbing through his books and not knowing they were standing right next to the author.

In the late 70’s I took a photography class from him at LSU. He invited the class to canoe with him deep into the Atchafalaya Basin to photograph. Five of us went along with him.

We spent three day in the wilderness watching him work. Sleeping in tents where we could find a spit of dry land, collecting and bagging snakes where we pitched our tents and releasing them when we pulled up stakes the next morning.

Those photographs were published in 1979 by National Geographic, titled Atchafalaya.

The new place just seems like a warehouse or a dollar general. It has no feeling.

He seems like a guy above the fray and appreciates solitude.
