First, you need to learn what preemptive means. Second, you need to not have such a small, fgty dog. As you obviously already have one, getting rid of said fgty dog would actually be considered corrective action.

Diagnose why it's barking. What does it usually bark at? Car noises? People talking? Maybe a neighbor had a new work schedule.

Try faking being asleep and see if you can figure it out.

There's something coming out or through the yard. Skunk, possum, cat, large rat

Something

Is he showing anxiety about something? Pacing, running around, breathing heavy?

If so, anxiety medicine might help.

Well here is a brief synopsis of Squeaker's barking history over the last week:

Over the weekend he was having episodes of diarrhea. He would bark desperately in the middle of the night, I wake up and let him out of the kennel and he proceeded to let out loads of liquified waste.

The diarrhea is over, but the untimely barking continues. He did it again last night, after 11 pm. I close the bedroom door and the barking just got louder (he's in an adjacent room in the kennel). After about an hour the barking mercifully ended. I think he barked himself to sleep.

I checked on him this morning, he seems alright.

My male is doing it right now because my female is in heat and I've got them separated.

If a male, could be a dog in heat nearby.

Fwiw. I shocked my last night and he stfu after first round of it. That was after kenneling putting him in bed of truck, bed of truck with kennel and Parking on other side of yard. Shock collar worked though.
