Barking In The Dead of Night

It just continues.
For five nights in a row my dog has started barking in the middle of the night, about one hour after I've fallen asleep. A loud, but high pitch, whining, whimpering, squeaking, annoying sort of bark.
What sort of preemptive action can be done to prevent this most infuriating new habit of his? Will blowing a dogwhistle stop it when he gets going?

Can you give more information?
How old is the dog? Is it being kenneled while you sleep? Is it free to wander around the house, including your room or is it being locked out? Does the dog stop if you get up and give it attention or sit with it? Have you noticed any other changes in behavior, if so you may want to go to the vet to make sure nothing is wrong.
