Initial on-scene evidence and Troopers’ preliminary investigation revealed that traffic was stopped or slowing to a stop on I-12 east at LA 21 due to congestion. An 18-wheeler, hauling avocados, was traveling in the right lane on I-12 approaching the traffic congestion. For unknown reasons, the 18-wheeler was unable to stop and started a chain reaction crash with nine other vehicles. The 18-wheeler jackknifed during the crash and caught fire, along with three other vehicles. The driver of the 18-wheeler died on the scene and positive identification has yet to be confirmed.
During the crash, a 2014 Lexus IS350 was struck by the 18-wheeler. The driver and passenger, Yoland Simmons and Keland Simmons of Baton Rouge, were pronounced dead on the scene. A 1997 Toyota 4Runner was also struck by the 18-wheeler and the driver, Rachel Lehmann of Mandeville, was taken to the hospital where she later died.

Looks like the 18-wheeler started it.

quote:When you begin to merge there (Pinnacle Parkway & I-12 East), you have to execute a slight dog-leg correction to the right in order to get parallel with the right lane of I-12. Unnatural. I haven't seen that with any other merge areas.
If true, this is part of the problem. People who are mediocre drivers, braking or fearful of merging cars.

Just passed by there at 11:15PM going westbound and there are still a ton of cop cars and other emergency vehicles on the eastbound side. Big mess.
I wouldnt be surprised if the integrity of the overpass is being checked. The fire could have weakened it.

I have been considering just taking the hwy 190-hwy 22 route in the evening on the way home.

Not a issue, it doesn't open that often. Oh and if I was a OT a-hole I would point out that the one in Madisonville isn't a draw bridge it is a swing bridge. But I knew what you meant

I was going to say, service roads would be the biggest thing they need.
There's already a "loop" of sorts, with Brewster Rd East circling under the bridge, turning west and bringing you to the shopping center and then connecting with Hwy 21.
The service roads are needed to connect 59 to 190 to 21... That, alone, will eliminate a huge percentage of traffic from even getting on the interstate.
Interstates aren't designed to handle "local" traffic and because the only other ways to get east-to-west or west-to-east in this area are so inconvenient, I-12 has turned into "main street". Between 1077 and 190 there's at least 1 accident EVERY SINGLE DAY and it's an absolute nightmare to deal with.
Meanwhile, Parish administration is focused on roundabouts or attempting to pass a tax increase for the 3rd time or which one of Pat Brister's friends is going to get the next land deal approval for his next 450 home, traffic snarling subdivision along a yet to even be built bypass road.

Actually it was the semi driver’s fault and it’s odd that they haven’t identified the at fault driver of the avacado truck.

Maybe because he/she perished in the fire, along with all documentation. I'm sure they're working with the owner of the truck to find out who was driving it and notify the driver's family before they blast the name all over the news and WWW.

It’s usually not an issue when the fire is on top of the bridge. It would be a much different story if the fire was under the bridge. The danger is weakening the steel rebar. With the fire on top the heat is moving away from the steel.

This was the man who was trying to get out of the window after cop shot it out. Still can’t get the picture of him trying to get out that window out of my mind.

Wow. I can't imagine it either. Can't imagine what the cop and anyone else who was trying to help is going thru right now either, knowing their attempts just weren't enough.
Prayers for all involved.

Lots of avocados are grown in Mexico, maybe he was from out of the country and it has been more difficult to identify him or next of kin.

Drove through there at about 3:30 and traffic went from 75 to a stop without any kind if warning, we almost got plowed by the car behind us.
It happens every afternoon at the bridge in both directions. It's like people are worried that the other side of the bridge has fallen

Identity of driver was released
Sheesh this baw was a little too long in the tooth to be driving 80k pounds of rolling steel.
Ole Elmer probably should of hung it up a couple years ago.

That’s difficult to believe. I don’t doubt it. Just seems incredible that an 80 year old Would be driving professionally.

My son is friends with a kid whose mother and brother died in this crash. Totally devastating.

Their little brother worked for me. Good people

This is why they couldnt pay me enough to be a first responder. All you can hope for was that it was over quick for whoever died and hope no one burned alive. So Sad.

Has to pass a DOT physical and piss tests, so he must be fit to drive, or he owned the avocado operation and was driving his own product to market to avoid middle men.

The truck driver apparently died in the flames. Just a terrible story.
