I drive this part of I-12 everyday. Westbound in the morning, eastbound in the afternoon.

The comment about cutting off Eastbound access from Pinnacle isn’t a bad idea. It’d need to be during peak commute times.

The comment about the typical driver stopping to look at the river is the age old theory that everyone likes to toss out there.

The real reason for wrecks like this is 18 wheeler drivers being allowed to pass on the left. If there was a stretch of 12 that said from 1077 to 1088 “trucks stay right”, the traffic and rubbernecking would drastically reduce.

This wreck was on video. There will be no doubt as to the reason why it happened. I feel like it could have been prevented though.

I say close that entrance from Pinnacle directly onto I-12 East until the new bridge is built. The right lane on Pinnacle entering La. 21 does not have a stop sign and feeds directly to the I-12 onramp going east.

Right.....by....the freaking bridge.
It’s the absolute dumbest shite I’ve ever seen. Take a spot where people already want to reduce their speed, add an oncoming lane of traffic that’s expected to merge at or around 70mph, and be sure to let 18 wheelers pass’em on the outside.

Unreal.

The benefit to entering I-12 East at La. 21 is a longer lane to merge from. With direct I-12 access from Pinnacle being closed, it should make merging at an appropriate speed more likely. Who knows if it will actually work until it's tried though. What we do know is what is currently configured is a shite show and... obviously quite dangerous.

Everyone slows down not to look into the river, but because that bridge doesn’t give you a view past it. Traffic from 12 onto 190 is backed up regularly to the bridge and people freak out about traffic over the bridge being at a standstill.

Add into that equation the new on ramp right before the Tchefuncta bridge and the bridge over 21 which makes another blind spot before that on ramp and it’s a absolute cluster frick.

That theory makes as much sense as any others. The state should immediately install message signs like the ones they have between the river and 190 to give motorist Causeway information. Instead have these to give info on traffic past the bridge and in that entire area. Have it set up somewhere around Goodbee. You could also install a warning light system. Green for free flowing traffic, make it orange to warn ppl of heavy congestion and flashing red light to warn of stand still traffic ahead. Just a idea, something must be done. This is the first real bad wreck in that area that I can recall but their have been far to many close calls. I know of 2 ppl personally that got rear ended about the spot of that Brewster road on ramp.

I guess I can't figure out, just by looking at Google maps and street views is to why this area is so bad.
Looks flat and straight. Now, it does look like the eastbound lane goes from 3 to 2 lanes as it goes over the bridge where the wreck occurred. Is this the problem? Was someone in the right lane all along and didn't realize it turned into an exit lane, then swerved over a lane right at the exit ramp to 21?
If so, I could see this happening. There is an interchange like this in Tuscaloosa where the right lane turns into an exit lane off I20/59 onto I359. All the time I see folks swerve over at the last moment, although for a mile it has been stating this is an exit only lane.

It backs up where 190/12 meet. People all the way in the left lane cut across 4 lanes because they need to exit for mandeville and the causeway.

This causes everyone to go slow so they dont hit someone cutting them off.

I have no doubts this was caused by some soccer mom texting jody and not any of the truck drivers.

Oh and people dont know that they can use the "acceleration lane" to accelerate and then merge. Ive watched people cut right over going like 25 and people are slamming on brakes for them.

Traffic starts backing up from the 12 overpass at the Tchefuncte, primarily caused by a short onramp from Pinnacle Pkwy and drivers wanting to look at the river.

Also, the rise in businesses in that area puts more stress on the exits and onramps from 21.

On any day, multiple times per day, eastbound traffic backs up from the river all the way back to the exit at 1077 or beyond. It's a clusterfrick.

There's already a proposal on the books for widening I-12 from Hwy 1077 to Hwy 59 AND add service roads that will connect all those exits and alleviate a lot of traffic from needing to use I-12.

Of course, that helps nothing now but maybe this tragedy will get the ball rolling faster.

Donahue said he understood the first phase was to begin in 2020, with the second slated to begin in 2022. But, he added, the money is not currently available.

Also, I firmly believe the Pinnacle Pkwy exits and onramps need to be closed ON BOTH THE EAST AND WESTBOUND sides. All it does is cause backups. Evening traffic on 190 in Mandeville is backed up from the 12 west exit, sometimes all the way to the Hwy 22 exit because traffic slowing going over the river and getting off at Pinnacle causes the backup. It's ridiculous!

Maybe they will finally get serious about widening the interstate

That stretch of 12 eastbound is bad.

Traffic slows down coming over the Hwy 21 bridge because of all the merging from the new exit and going over the Tchefuncte.

Red circled area is where the accident happened on the Hwy 21 overpass. The yellow line indicates where traffic constantly backs up from the river to beyond Hwy 21.

I’m not sure why people won’t do the speed limit over that bridge. My guess is they’re either confused or scared about the speed limit. As if there is a trooper or STPSO on the other side waiting to pop you for speeding. Slowing at the river is obviously the issue. Why they do it is probably different for everyone. Either way, the rubbernecking there is unreal. I saw a tacoma flying up from behind me one afternoon that hit the brakes, skid, swerved around me, and finally stopped on the shoulder/grass on the left. I thought he or I were toast. Or both.

Really, what’s amazing is how there haven’t been more fatalities there.

How will they even be able to identify- this is so awful. No way you could read plates or get any identifying info on some of these cars. Prayers to all the families.

This! At multiple times during the day - even before rush hour (1pm-2pm) - traffic slows to a crawl for absolutely no apparent reason. It starts to slow as you cross the Tchefuncte River heading east and starts backing up toward Goodbee. Right after you cross the bridge, it speeds up again. It's just stupid. A friend theorized that people see the sign that says "Tchefuncte River" and because it's an odd sounding name with the funny spelling, they slow down to rubber-neck.

I drive this every single day and never can figure out WTF is wrong. Literally a dead stop before that Tchefuncta river overpass and then 70mph right after

They will be able to get vin # off burned chassis and run through DMV on this horrible accident. State of Louisiana and Govt should be responsible for this disaster because with the amount of traffic going through and they worry about changing hwy 190! Idiots!

They are currently expanding why 190 in St Tammany from I12 to Collins Blvd....total waste! Instead of widening the dam Interstate.

Just passed by there at 11:15PM going westbound and there are still a ton of cop cars and other emergency vehicles on the eastbound side. Big mess.
