Spine surgery NP suspects L3-4, so does PT today.

No MRI? I would be getting some accurate info before making those kind of decisions

I've had 3 in last 20 years. 1st was a laminectomy in 99 then had to go DBL fusion 7 years later after another auto accident. Had the 3rd surgery to clean up scar tissue back in 18. Been doing pretty good so far, get the occasional jolts and spasms, but if you keep weight down, do proper stretching, and get good sleep you should buy yourself some extra time.

You need an MRI to determine the severity.

Had a neck fusion back in 2010.
Once you get one, you notice a lot of other people with the same scar.

Had a disc "trimmed" about 10 years ago.
Woke up and saw my doc sitting in a chair across the room.
"What's up, Doc?"
"I just wanted to make sure you're OK".
"Thanx, Doc. Feels better already".
"That's the dilaudid"
"Figures"

Two back surgeries for me. Recovery time for the 2nd surgery was much longer. But they went in from the front the second go around so it was quite a bit more painful after. Also the second surgery didn't even really help that and I'm just dealing with it.

Did allow me to get back to playing golf and working out so it wasn't a complete failure.

I've done my share of things mentioned in this thread: car accidents, work, martial arts, etc, but I haven't had major back or neck problems, thankfully, which is why I'm naturally curious. I'd either like to continue this run of good luck or avoid any detrimental events partaken by others.

jumped off a cliff into a river. I did not jump out far enough, and my arse slammed the bottom.

I had something similar. A tree had fallen across my grandparents driveway in a storm one night. So I went up there to help cut it up and clear it from the driveway. It is on a steep hill and there is a retaining wall on one side if it. I was standing on the high part and had used the chainsaw and cut several sections of the tree and was working right next to the edge of the wall with about a 10 foot drop. I finished the cut and took a step backwards right off the wall.

My only thought as I fell was get as far away from the chainsaw as possible. So, I slung it and braced for impact. Impact was dead flat on my arse. I figured my tailbone would be smashed, but the pain in my lower back was intense and instant. Fractured my L3, L4 and L5. Hurt like a mfer and still does every now and then to this day.

Uhhh I know this stuff is frowned upon but rather than getting cut on or hooked on pills

Go on amazon and type “equine msm” and get the big tub

It has a big scoop that’s the horse dose

Take the horse dose once a day

It works

Spinal specialist PT here.

Do yourself a favor, buy the book "Treat Your Own Back" by Robin McKenzie. Find someone in your area, who practices the McKenzie Method/MDT. Make sure you find someone who is certified in the method, not just someone including it in their bio on the website. You can search for a list of credentialed providers in your zip code on this website LINK /

These people are much better at working with spine than your average PT who is going to give you some random stretches. You can try to read the book yourself and do it self guided, but I would find someone. Give it 3 months minimum before surgery.

These surgical PAs and honestly the surgeons themselves don't view surgery properly in my opinion. Back and neck surgery are for severe cases only where the patient is declining neurologically, ie urinating on themselves or losing motor control of their legs. These ortho groups view it as a means for pain relief, which it rarely is, especially with fusions. A lot of these injuries have a way of working themselves out over the course of 3 months. Don't let anyone talk you into surgery without exhausting all options first, including therapy, weight loss, injections, etc.

Just the two cents of a random therapist on the internet.
