Serious question- how expensive were these military schools? Was this more of a middle-upper class thing or was it affordable for lower-class families as well?

Back in my youth there was a boarding school in the South that seemed to produce monks or military personnel at graduation. If memory serves, it was the cheapest boarding school in the United States at the time. Not sure if it is still operating but the cost of going there was never an issue, no matter how poor. Course I am old enough to remember orphanages and groups like "The Order of Oddfellows" that supported some of them. Odda are good they are long since closed.

When I started 7th grade three of my friends disappeared. They were sent to military schools and only one of them returned for high school

I have two cousins who went there. My parents sent me to Battle Ground Academy. I sent my son to Riverside Military Academy.

My best friend of 40 years got sent to military school at Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville, GA when he was about 15. I think it’s called something else now. His dad was tired of his shite.

They used to spend winters in Hollywood, FL. The school was about 10 blocks from my high school. They stood out like a sore thumb. We called them River Rats.

I've passed by LTI in Monroe. It looks grim now. I can only imagine what it was like then. It has a cool looking art deco front gate though.

It was a really good place. My great uncle was over LTI for a lot of years in the 50s-70s. Although I'm sure it didn't turn all the lives around, they made the young men who went there work and study and had athletics as well. They grew all the food they ate, raised farm animals, etc. It definitely changed a lot of lives. If some of our current misguided youth were out of their environment and made to work hard, it might change some things.

Us middle-class folks did not have the money to ship kids to military school. What my dad did was to give me a push lawn mower and tell me to go cut other peoples yards for a dollar a piece spending money. St Augustine grass in July was a bitch.

I’m not sure exactly how expensive they were. I’m also not sure how affordable they were to most.

Castle Heights is closed. For several years Battle Ground has been coed and no longer accepts boarders. Riverside is now Riverside Preparatory Academy but is still male only.

My parents sent my brother to boot camp when he turned 18. He was dishonorably discharged two years later. I guess there are some screwups even the military can’t fix.
