A good rule of thumb is that, if you find yourself thinking "hm, is this name too trendy or creative," don't use it. Most trendy names will not age well, so if it's on the edge in 2013, it will likely seem ridiculous by 2033.

I wanted to name my boy Willem and was shot down by every female involved. I still think its a great name.

A lot of the people with kids my age are using the mother's maiden name for their kid's first name.
Some are ok but I know tons of kids with shitty first names that are their mom's maiden name just because their friends did the same.

Girl I know just did this. Her maiden name was Tucker, which I thought was a kinda cute boy name.

as with everything, no matter what you name your kid, someone out there is going to think it's stupid

True, ultimately just go with what you like. That's why we went with Katniss Everdeen

Don't pick classic/common names and switch up the spelling. Someone I work with is named "Lyndzi"
Here is our test: does it work as a little kid, a teenager, and as a CEO?

you wouldn't even believe the stupid arse named kids some of my patients have…
for white people, it's getting too creative with a "normal" name, and for black people it's trying to fit the daddy's name in the kid's name regardless of sex…..
all i can do is laugh… and weep for the future….

When I played youth soccer when I was like 6, there were 2 kids (brothers) on the team named Zeb and Zeremy. I'll always remember that.
