My Dad's dad was small and so were most of his brothers. All in that 5'7" range. OTOH, my paternal grandmother's side were all big. Even the women were tall, especially given the time. My dad, their only child, was 6' even.
Nearly the same thing on my mom's side. Smallish men and larger women. My mom was something ike 5'7" I think. When my mom and dad came together, they had four kids and we're all tall...so I'm assuming the bets bet for tall kids ends up being a taller mom.
My wife is small...5'2". We have two boys. The older looks like he'll fall in that national average somewhere. The other will likely be around my height.
As far as locally, I noticed that I suddenly seemed taller when I moved to Lafayette. Shorter Cajun men here I guess. Never noticed that disparity in NOLA, and when I go to Baton Rouge everyone seems much taller than here so wile I still am taller than most it's much less obvious.
